| 1“My heart pounds as I think of this. It trembles within me. | 1My heart pounds at this and leaps from my chest. |
| 2Listen carefully to the thunder of God’s voice as it rolls from his mouth. | 2Just listen to His thunderous voice and the rumbling that comes from His mouth. |
| 3It rolls across the heavens, and his lightning flashes in every direction. | 3He lets it loose beneath the entire sky; His lightning to the ends of the earth. |
| 4Then comes the roaring of the thunder— the tremendous voice of his majesty. He does not restrain it when he speaks. | 4Then there comes a roaring sound; God thunders with His majestic voice. He does not restrain the lightning when His rumbling voice is heard. |
| 5God’s voice is glorious in the thunder. We can’t even imagine the greatness of his power. | 5God thunders marvelously with His voice; He does great things that we cannot comprehend. |
| 6“He directs the snow to fall on the earth and tells the rain to pour down. | 6For He says to the snow, "Fall to the earth," and the torrential rains, His mighty torrential rains, |
| 7Then everyone stops working so they can watch his power. | 7serve as His sign to all mankind, so that all men may know His work. |
| 8The wild animals take cover and stay inside their dens. | 8The wild animals enter their lairs and stay in their dens. |
| 9The stormy wind comes from its chamber, and the driving winds bring the cold. | 9The windstorm comes from its chamber, and the cold from the driving north winds. |
| 10God’s breath sends the ice, freezing wide expanses of water. | 10Ice is formed by the breath of God, and watery expanses are frozen. |
| 11He loads the clouds with moisture, and they flash with his lightning. | 11He saturates clouds with moisture; He scatters His lightning through them. |
| 12The clouds churn about at his direction. They do whatever he commands throughout the earth. | 12They swirl about, turning round and round at His direction, accomplishing everything He commands them over the surface of the inhabited world. |
| 13He makes these things happen either to punish people or to show his unfailing love. | 13He causes this to happen for punishment, for His land, or for His faithful love. |
| 14“Pay attention to this, Job. Stop and consider the wonderful miracles of God! | 14Listen to this, Job. Stop and consider God's wonders. |
| 15Do you know how God controls the storm and causes the lightning to flash from his clouds? | 15Do you know how God directs His clouds or makes their lightning flash? |
| 16Do you understand how he moves the clouds with wonderful perfection and skill? | 16Do you understand how the clouds float, those wonderful works of Him who has perfect knowledge? |
| 17When you are sweltering in your clothes and the south wind dies down and everything is still, | 17You whose clothes get hot when the south wind brings calm to the land, |
| 18he makes the skies reflect the heat like a bronze mirror. Can you do that? | 18can you help God spread out the skies as hard as a cast metal mirror? |
| 19“So teach the rest of us what to say to God. We are too ignorant to make our own arguments. | 19Teach us what we should say to Him; we cannot prepare our case because of our darkness. |
| 20Should God be notified that I want to speak? Can people even speak when they are confused? | 20Should He be told that I want to speak? Can a man speak when he is confused? |
| 21We cannot look at the sun, for it shines brightly in the sky when the wind clears away the clouds. | 21Now men cannot even look at the sun when it is in the skies, after a wind has swept through and cleared them away. |
| 22So also, golden splendor comes from the mountain of God. He is clothed in dazzling splendor. | 22Yet out of the north He comes, shrouded in a golden glow; awesome majesty surrounds Him. |
| 23We cannot imagine the power of the Almighty; but even though he is just and righteous, he does not destroy us. | 23The Almighty--we cannot reach Him-- He is exalted in power! He will not oppress justice and abundant righteousness, |
| 24No wonder people everywhere fear him. All who are wise show him reverence. ” | 24Therefore, men fear Him. He does not look favorably on any who are wise in heart. |
