Jesus called his twelve disciples together and gave them authority to cast out evil spirits and to heal every kind of disease and illness.1Then Jesus called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority over unclean spirits, so that they could drive them out and heal every disease and every illness.
Here are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon (also called Peter), then Andrew (Peter’s brother), James (son of Zebedee), John (James’s brother),2These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon (who is called Peter) and his brother Andrew; James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John;
Philip, Bartholomew, Thomas, Matthew (the tax collector), James (son of Alphaeus), Thaddaeus,3Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James, the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus;
Simon (the zealot ), Judas Iscariot (who later betrayed him).4Simon the Cananaean and Judas Iscariot, who later betrayed Jesus.
Jesus sent out the twelve apostles with these instructions: “Don’t go to the Gentiles or the Samaritans,5These were the Twelve whom Jesus sent out after he had given them these instructions: "Don't turn on to the road that leads to the unbelievers, and don't enter Samaritan towns.
but only to the people of Israel—God’s lost sheep.6Instead, go to the lost sheep of the nation of Israel.
Go and announce to them that the Kingdom of Heaven is near.7As you go, make this announcement: 'The kingdom from heaven is near!'
Heal the sick, raise the dead, cure those with leprosy, and cast out demons. Give as freely as you have received!8Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, drive out demons. You have received without payment, so give without payment.
“Don’t take any money in your money belts—no gold, silver, or even copper coins.9Don't take any gold, silver, or copper in your moneybags,
Don’t carry a traveler’s bag with a change of clothes and sandals or even a walking stick. Don’t hesitate to accept hospitality, because those who work deserve to be fed.10or a traveling bag for the trip, or an extra shirt, or sandals, or a walking stick, because a worker deserves his food.
“Whenever you enter a city or village, search for a worthy person and stay in his home until you leave town.11"Whatever town or village you enter, find out who is receptive in it and stay there until you leave.
When you enter the home, give it your blessing.12As you enter the house, greet its occupants.
If it turns out to be a worthy home, let your blessing stand; if it is not, take back the blessing.13If the household is receptive, let your blessing of peace come on it. But if it isn't receptive, let your blessing of peace return to you.
If any household or town refuses to welcome you or listen to your message, shake its dust from your feet as you leave.14If no one welcomes you or listens to your words, as you leave that house or town, shake its dust off your feet.
I tell you the truth, the wicked cities of Sodom and Gomorrah will be better off than such a town on the judgment day.15I tell all of you with certainty, it will be more bearable for the region of Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town!"
“Look, I am sending you out as sheep among wolves. So be as shrewd as snakes and harmless as doves.16"Pay attention, now! I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. So be as cunning as serpents and as innocent as doves.
But beware! For you will be handed over to the courts and will be flogged with whips in the synagogues.17Watch out for people who will hand you over to the local councils and whip you in their synagogues.
You will stand trial before governors and kings because you are my followers. But this will be your opportunity to tell the rulers and other unbelievers about me.18You will be brought before governors and kings because of me, to testify to them and to unbelievers.
When you are arrested, don’t worry about how to respond or what to say. God will give you the right words at the right time.19When they hand you over, don't worry about how you are to speak or what you are to say, because in that hour what you are to say will be given to you.
For it is not you who will be speaking—it will be the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.20It won't be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.
“A brother will betray his brother to death, a father will betray his own child, and children will rebel against their parents and cause them to be killed.21"Brother will hand brother over for execution, and a father his child. Children will rebel against parents and have them put to death.
And all nations will hate you because you are my followers. But everyone who endures to the end will be saved.22You will be hated by everyone because of my name. But the person who endures to the end will be saved.
When you are persecuted in one town, flee to the next. I tell you the truth, the Son of Man will return before you have reached all the towns of Israel.23So when they persecute you in one town, flee to the next, because I tell all of you with certainty that you will not have gone through the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.
“Students are not greater than their teacher, and slaves are not greater than their master.24"A disciple is not above his teacher, and a slave is not above his master.
Students are to be like their teacher, and slaves are to be like their master. And since I, the master of the household, have been called the prince of demons, the members of my household will be called by even worse names!25It is enough for a disciple to be like his teacher and a slave to be like his master. If they have called the head of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they do the same to those of his household!"
“But don’t be afraid of those who threaten you. For the time is coming when everything that is covered will be revealed, and all that is secret will be made known to all.26"So never be afraid of them, because there is nothing hidden that will not be revealed, and nothing secret that will not be made known.
What I tell you now in the darkness, shout abroad when daybreak comes. What I whisper in your ear, shout from the housetops for all to hear!27What I tell you in darkness you must speak in the daylight, and what is whispered in your ear you must shout from the housetops.
“Don’t be afraid of those who want to kill your body; they cannot touch your soul. Fear only God, who can destroy both soul and body in hell.28Stop being afraid of those who kill the body but can't kill the soul. Instead, be afraid of the one who can destroy both body and soul in hell.
What is the price of two sparrows—one copper coin ? But not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it.29"Two sparrows are sold for a penny, aren't they? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground without your Father's permission.
And the very hairs on your head are all numbered.30Indeed, even the hairs on your head have all been counted!
So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows.31So stop being afraid. You are worth more than a bunch of sparrows."
“Everyone who acknowledges me publicly here on earth, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven.32"Therefore, everyone who acknowledges me before people I, too, will acknowledge before my Father in heaven.
But everyone who denies me here on earth, I will also deny before my Father in heaven.33But whoever denies me before people I, too, will deny before my Father in heaven."
“Don’t imagine that I came to bring peace to the earth! I came not to bring peace, but a sword.34"Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword!
‘I have come to set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.35I came to turn 'a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.
Your enemies will be right in your own household!’36A person's enemies will include members of his own family.'
“If you love your father or mother more than you love me, you are not worthy of being mine; or if you love your son or daughter more than me, you are not worthy of being mine.37"The one who loves his father or mother more than me isn't worthy of me, and the one who loves a son or daughter more than me isn't worthy of me.
If you refuse to take up your cross and follow me, you are not worthy of being mine.38The one who doesn't take up his cross and follow me isn't worthy of me.
If you cling to your life, you will lose it; but if you give up your life for me, you will find it.39The one who finds his life will lose it, and the one who loses his life because of me will find it."
“Anyone who receives you receives me, and anyone who receives me receives the Father who sent me.40"The one who receives you receives me, and the one who receives me receives the one who sent me.
If you receive a prophet as one who speaks for God, you will be given the same reward as a prophet. And if you receive righteous people because of their righteousness, you will be given a reward like theirs.41The one who receives a prophet as a prophet will receive a prophet's reward, and the one who receives a righteous person as a righteous person will receive a righteous person's reward.
And if you give even a cup of cold water to one of the least of my followers, you will surely be rewarded.”42I tell all of you with certainty, whoever gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is a disciple will never lose his reward."
