1So Jacob set out for Egypt with all his possessions. And when he came to Beersheba, he offered sacrifices to the God of his father, Isaac. | 1And Israel took his journey with all that he had, and came to Beersheba, and offered sacrifices unto the God of his father Isaac. |
2During the night God spoke to him in a vision. “Jacob! Jacob!” he called. “Here I am,” Jacob replied. | 2And God spake unto Israel in the visions of the night, and said, Jacob, Jacob. And he said, Here am I. |
3“I am God, the God of your father,” the voice said. “Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for there I will make your family into a great nation. | 3And he said, I am God, the God of thy father: fear not to go down into Egypt; for I will there make of thee a great nation: |
4I will go with you down to Egypt, and I will bring you back again. You will die in Egypt, but Joseph will be with you to close your eyes.” | 4I will go down with thee into Egypt; and I will also surely bring thee up again: and Joseph shall put his hand upon thine eyes. |
5So Jacob left Beersheba, and his sons took him to Egypt. They carried him and their little ones and their wives in the wagons Pharaoh had provided for them. | 5And Jacob rose up from Beersheba: and the sons of Israel carried Jacob their father, and their little ones, and their wives, in the wagons which Pharaoh had sent to carry him. |
6They also took all their livestock and all the personal belongings they had acquired in the land of Canaan. So Jacob and his entire family went to Egypt— | 6And they took their cattle, and their goods, which they had gotten in the land of Canaan, and came into Egypt, Jacob, and all his seed with him: |
7sons and grandsons, daughters and granddaughters—all his descendants. | 7His sons, and his sons' sons with him, his daughters, and his sons' daughters, and all his seed brought he with him into Egypt. |
8These are the names of the descendants of Israel—the sons of Jacob—who went to Egypt: Reuben was Jacob’s oldest son. | 8And these are the names of the children of Israel, which came into Egypt, Jacob and his sons: Reuben, Jacob's firstborn. |
9The sons of Reuben were Hanoch, Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi. | 9And the sons of Reuben; Hanoch, and Phallu, and Hezron, and Carmi. |
10The sons of Simeon were Jemuel, Jamin, Ohad, Jakin, Zohar, and Shaul. (Shaul’s mother was a Canaanite woman.) | 10And the sons of Simeon; Jemuel, and Jamin, and Ohad, and Jachin, and Zohar, and Shaul the son of a Canaanitish woman. |
11The sons of Levi were Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. | 11And the sons of Levi; Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. |
12The sons of Judah were Er, Onan, Shelah, Perez, and Zerah (though Er and Onan had died in the land of Canaan). The sons of Perez were Hezron and Hamul. | 12And the sons of Judah; Er, and Onan, and Shelah, and Pharez, and Zerah: but Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan. And the sons of Pharez were Hezron and Hamul. |
13The sons of Issachar were Tola, Puah, Jashub, and Shimron. | 13And the sons of Issachar; Tola, and Phuvah, and Job, and Shimron. |
14The sons of Zebulun were Sered, Elon, and Jahleel. | 14And the sons of Zebulun; Sered, and Elon, and Jahleel. |
15These were the sons of Leah and Jacob who were born in Paddan-aram, in addition to their daughter, Dinah. The number of Jacob’s descendants (male and female) through Leah was thirty-three. | 15These be the sons of Leah, which she bare unto Jacob in Padanaram, with his daughter Dinah: all the souls of his sons and his daughters were thirty and three. |
16The sons of Gad were Zephon, Haggi, Shuni, Ezbon, Eri, Arodi, and Areli. | 16And the sons of Gad; Ziphion, and Haggi, Shuni, and Ezbon, Eri, and Arodi, and Areli. |
17The sons of Asher were Imnah, Ishvah, Ishvi, and Beriah. Their sister was Serah. Beriah’s sons were Heber and Malkiel. | 17And the sons of Asher; Jimnah, and Ishuah, and Isui, and Beriah, and Serah their sister: and the sons of Beriah; Heber, and Malchiel. |
18These were the sons of Zilpah, the servant given to Leah by her father, Laban. The number of Jacob’s descendants through Zilpah was sixteen. | 18These are the sons of Zilpah, whom Laban gave to Leah his daughter, and these she bare unto Jacob, even sixteen souls. |
19The sons of Jacob’s wife Rachel were Joseph and Benjamin. | 19The sons of Rachel Jacob's wife; Joseph, and Benjamin. |
20Joseph’s sons, born in the land of Egypt, were Manasseh and Ephraim. Their mother was Asenath, daughter of Potiphera, the priest of On. | 20And unto Joseph in the land of Egypt were born Manasseh and Ephraim, which Asenath the daughter of Potipherah priest of On bare unto him. |
21Benjamin’s sons were Bela, Beker, Ashbel, Gera, Naaman, Ehi, Rosh, Muppim, Huppim, and Ard. | 21And the sons of Benjamin were Belah, and Becher, and Ashbel, Gera, and Naaman, Ehi, and Rosh, Muppim, and Huppim, and Ard. |
22These were the sons of Rachel and Jacob. The number of Jacob’s descendants through Rachel was fourteen. | 22These are the sons of Rachel, which were born to Jacob: all the souls were fourteen. |
23The son of Dan was Hushim. | 23And the sons of Dan; Hushim. |
24The sons of Naphtali were Jahzeel, Guni, Jezer, and Shillem. | 24And the sons of Naphtali; Jahzeel, and Guni, and Jezer, and Shillem. |
25These were the sons of Bilhah, the servant given to Rachel by her father, Laban. The number of Jacob’s descendants through Bilhah was seven. | 25These are the sons of Bilhah, which Laban gave unto Rachel his daughter, and she bare these unto Jacob: all the souls were seven. |
26The total number of Jacob’s direct descendants who went with him to Egypt, not counting his sons’ wives, was sixty-six. | 26All the souls that came with Jacob into Egypt, which came out of his loins, besides Jacob's sons' wives, all the souls were threescore and six; |
27In addition, Joseph had two sons who were born in Egypt. So altogether, there were seventy members of Jacob’s family in the land of Egypt. Jacob’s Family Arrives in Goshen | 27And the sons of Joseph, which were born him in Egypt, were two souls: all the souls of the house of Jacob, which came into Egypt, were threescore and ten. |
28As they neared their destination, Jacob sent Judah ahead to meet Joseph and get directions to the region of Goshen. And when they finally arrived there, | 28And he sent Judah before him unto Joseph, to direct his face unto Goshen; and they came into the land of Goshen. |
29Joseph prepared his chariot and traveled to Goshen to meet his father, Jacob. When Joseph arrived, he embraced his father and wept, holding him for a long time. | 29And Joseph made ready his chariot, and went up to meet Israel his father, to Goshen, and presented himself unto him; and he fell on his neck, and wept on his neck a good while. |
30Finally, Jacob said to Joseph, “Now I am ready to die, since I have seen your face again and know you are still alive.” | 30And Israel said unto Joseph, Now let me die, since I have seen thy face, because thou art yet alive. |
31And Joseph said to his brothers and to his father’s entire family, “I will go to Pharaoh and tell him, ‘My brothers and my father’s entire family have come to me from the land of Canaan. | 31And Joseph said unto his brethren, and unto his father's house, I will go up, and shew Pharaoh, and say unto him, My brethren, and my father's house, which were in the land of Canaan, are come unto me; |
32These men are shepherds, and they raise livestock. They have brought with them their flocks and herds and everything they own.’” | 32And the men are shepherds, for their trade hath been to feed cattle; and they have brought their flocks, and their herds, and all that they have. |
33Then he said, “When Pharaoh calls for you and asks you about your occupation, | 33And it shall come to pass, when Pharaoh shall call you, and shall say, What is your occupation? |
34you must tell him, ‘We, your servants, have raised livestock all our lives, as our ancestors have always done.’ When you tell him this, he will let you live here in the region of Goshen, for the Egyptians despise shepherds.” | 34That ye shall say, Thy servants' trade hath been about cattle from our youth even until now, both we, and also our fathers: that ye may dwell in the land of Goshen; for every shepherd is an abomination unto the Egyptians. |
