This letter is from Paul, Silas, and Timothy. We are writing to the church in Thessalonica, to you who belong to God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. May God give you grace and peace. The Faith of the Thessalonian Believers1From Paul and Silvanus and Timothy, to the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Grace and peace to you!
We always thank God for all of you and pray for you constantly.2We thank God always for all of you as we mention you constantly in our prayers,
As we pray to our God and Father about you, we think of your faithful work, your loving deeds, and the enduring hope you have because of our Lord Jesus Christ.3because we recall in the presence of our God and Father your work of faith and labor of love and endurance of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.
We know, dear brothers and sisters, that God loves you and has chosen you to be his own people.4We know, brothers and sisters loved by God, that he has chosen you,
For when we brought you the Good News, it was not only with words but also with power, for the Holy Spirit gave you full assurance that what we said was true. And you know of our concern for you from the way we lived when we were with you.5in that our gospel did not come to you merely in words, but in power and in the Holy Spirit and with deep conviction (surely you recall the character we displayed when we came among you to help you).
So you received the message with joy from the Holy Spirit in spite of the severe suffering it brought you. In this way, you imitated both us and the Lord.6And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, when you received the message with joy that comes from the Holy Spirit, despite great affliction.
As a result, you have become an example to all the believers in Greece—throughout both Macedonia and Achaia.7As a result you became an example to all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia.
And now the word of the Lord is ringing out from you to people everywhere, even beyond Macedonia and Achaia, for wherever we go we find people telling us about your faith in God. We don’t need to tell them about it,8For from you the message of the Lord has echoed forth not just in Macedonia and Achaia, but in every place reports of your faith in God have spread, so that we do not need to say anything.
for they keep talking about the wonderful welcome you gave us and how you turned away from idols to serve the living and true God.9For people everywhere report how you welcomed us and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God
And they speak of how you are looking forward to the coming of God’s Son from heaven—Jesus, whom God raised from the dead. He is the one who has rescued us from the terrors of the coming judgment.10and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, Jesus our deliverer from the coming wrath.
