Perhaps we may find grass and save the horses and mules alive, and not lose some of the animals.”	And Ahab said unto Obadiah, Go into the land, unto all fountains of water, and unto all brooks: peradventure we may find grass to save the horses and mules alive, that we lose not all the beasts.	Then Ahab said to Obadiah, “Go through the land to all the springs of water and to all the river valleys; perhaps we will find grass and keep the horses and mules alive, and not <i>have to</i> kill some of the cattle.”	Ahab had said to Obadiah, “Go through the land to all the springs and valleys. Maybe we can find some grass to keep the horses and mules alive so we will not have to kill any of our animals.”
6	So they divided the land to explore. Ahab went one way by himself, and Obadiah went the other way by himself.	So they divided the land between them to pass through it. Now as Obadiah was on the way, behold, Elijah met him, and he recognized him and fell on his face and said, “Is it you, Elijah my master?”	As Obadiah was walking along, Elijah met him. Obadiah recognized him, bowed down to the ground, and said, “Is it really you, my lord Elijah?”
8	“It is I,” he answered. “Go tell your master, ‘Elijah is here!’ ”	And he answered him, “It is I. Go, tell your lord, ‘Behold, Elijah is here.’”	And he answered him, I <i>am</i>: go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah <i>is here</i>.	And he said to him, “It is I. Go, say to your master, ‘Behold, Elijah <i>is here.</i>’”	“Yes,” he replied. “Go tell your master, ‘Elijah is here.’”
9	But Obadiah replied, “How have I sinned, that you are handing your servant over to Ahab to put me to death?	And he said, “How have I sinned, that you would give your servant into the hand of Ahab, to kill me?	And he said, What have I sinned, that thou wouldest deliver thy servant into the hand of Ahab, to slay me?	But he said, “What sin have I committed, that you are handing your servant over to Ahab, to put me to death?	“What have I done wrong,” asked Obadiah, “that you are handing your servant over to Ahab to be put to death?
10	As surely as the LORD your God lives, there is no nation or kingdom where my lord has not sent someone to search for you. When they said, ‘He is not here,’ he made that kingdom or nation swear that they had not found you.	As the LORD your God lives, there is no nation or kingdom where my lord has not sent to seek you. And when they would say, ‘He is not here,’ he would take an oath of the kingdom or nation, that they had not found you.	<i>As</i> the LORD thy God liveth, there is no nation or kingdom, whither my lord hath not sent to seek thee: and when they said, <i>He is</i> not <i>there</i>; he took an oath of the kingdom and nation, that they found thee not.	As <i>surely as</i> the LORD your God lives, there is no nation or kingdom to which my master has not sent <i>word</i> to search for you; and whenever they say, ‘He is not <i>here,</i>’ he makes the kingdom or nation swear that they could not find you.	As surely as the LORD your God lives, there is not a nation or kingdom where my master has not sent someone to look for you. And whenever a nation or kingdom claimed you were not there, he made them swear they could not find you.
11	And now you say, ‘Go tell your master that Elijah is here!’	And now you say, ‘Go, tell your lord, “Behold, Elijah is here.”’	And now thou sayest, Go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah <i>is here</i>.	Yet now you are saying, ‘Go, say to your master, “Behold, Elijah <i>is here!</i>”’	But now you tell me to go to my master and say, ‘Elijah is here.’
12	I do not know where the Spirit of the LORD may carry you off when I leave you. Then when I go and tell Ahab and he does not find you, he will kill me. But I, your servant, have feared the LORD from my youth.	And as soon as I have gone from you, the Spirit of the LORD will carry you I know not where. And so, when I come and tell Ahab and he cannot find you, he will kill me, although I your servant have feared the LORD from my youth.	And it shall come to pass, <i>as soon as</i> I am gone from thee, that the Spirit of the LORD shall carry thee whither I know not; and <i>so</i> when I come and tell Ahab, and he cannot find thee, he shall slay me: but I thy servant fear the LORD from my youth.	And it will come about when I leave you that the Spirit of the LORD will carry you to where I do not know; so when I come and inform Ahab and he cannot find you, he will kill me, though <i>I,</i> your servant, have feared the LORD from my youth.	I don’t know where the Spirit of the LORD may carry you when I leave you. If I go and tell Ahab and he doesn’t find you, he will kill me. Yet I your servant have worshiped the LORD since my youth.
13	Was it not reported to my lord what I did when Jezebel slaughtered the prophets of the LORD? I hid a hundred prophets of the LORD, fifty men per cave, and I provided them with food and water.	Has it not been told my lord what I did when Jezebel killed the prophets of the LORD, how I hid a hundred men of the LORD’s prophets by fifties in a cave and fed them with bread and water?	Was it not told my lord what I did when Jezebel slew the prophets of the LORD, how I hid an hundred men of the LORD'S prophets by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water?	Has it not been reported to my master what I did when Jezebel killed the prophets of the LORD, that I hid a hundred prophets of the LORD by fifties in a cave, and provided them with bread and water? 14	And now you say, ‘Go tell your lord that Elijah is here!’ He will kill me!”	And now you say, ‘Go, tell your lord, “Behold, Elijah is here”’; and he will kill me.”	And now thou sayest, Go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah <i>is here</i>: and he shall slay me.	Yet now you are saying, ‘Go, say to your master, “Behold, Elijah <i>is here</i>”’; he will then kill me!”	And now you tell me to go to my master and say, ‘Elijah is here.’ He will kill me!”
15	Then Elijah said, “As surely as the LORD of Hosts lives, before whom I stand, I will present myself to Ahab today.”	And Elijah said, “As the LORD of hosts lives, before whom I stand, I will surely show myself to him today.”	And Elijah said, <i>As</i> the LORD of hosts liveth, before whom I stand, I will surely shew myself unto him to day.	Then Elijah said, “As <i>surely as</i> the LORD of armies lives, before whom I stand, I will certainly present myself to him today.”	Elijah said, “As the LORD Almighty lives, whom I serve, I will surely present myself to Ahab today.”
16	So Obadiah went to inform Ahab, who went to meet Elijah.	So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him. And Ahab went to meet Elijah.	So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him: and Ahab went to meet Elijah.	So Obadiah went to meet Ahab and informed him; then Ahab went to meet Elijah. 17	When Ahab saw Elijah, he said to him, “Is that you, O troubler of Israel?”	When Ahab saw Elijah, Ahab said to him, “Is it you, you troubler of Israel?”	And it came to pass, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said unto him, <i>Art</i> thou he that troubleth Israel?	When Ahab saw Elijah, Ahab said to him, “Is this you, the cause of disaster to Israel?”	When he saw Elijah, he said to him, “Is that you, you troubler of Israel?”
18	“I have not troubled Israel,” Elijah replied, “but you and your father’s house have, for you have forsaken the commandments of the LORD and have followed the Baals.	And he answered, “I have not troubled Israel, but you have, and your father’s house, because you have abandoned the commandments of the LORD and followed the Baals.	And he answered, I have not troubled Israel; but thou, and thy father's house, in that ye have forsaken the commandments of the LORD, and thou hast followed Baalim.	He said, “I have not brought disaster to Israel, but you and your father’s house <i>have,</i> because you have abandoned the commandments of the LORD and you have followed the Baals.	“I have not made trouble for Israel,” Elijah replied. “But you and your father’s family have. You have abandoned the LORD’s commands and have followed the Baals.
19	Now summon all Israel to meet me on Mount Carmel, along with the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal and the four hundred prophets of Asherah who eat at Jezebel’s table.”	Now therefore send and gather all Israel to me at Mount Carmel, and the 450 prophets of Baal and the 400 prophets of Asherah, who eat at Jezebel’s table.”	Now therefore send, <i>and</i> gather to me all Israel unto mount Carmel, and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the groves four hundred, which eat at Jezebel's table.	Now then, send <i>orders and</i> gather to me all Israel at Mount Carmel, <i>together</i> with 450 prophets of Baal and four hundred prophets of the Asherah, who eat at Jezebel’s table.”	Now summon the people from all over Israel to meet me on Mount Carmel. And bring the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal and the four hundred prophets of Asherah, who eat at Jezebel’s table.”
20	So Ahab summoned all the Israelites and assembled the prophets on Mount Carmel.	So Ahab sent to all the people of Israel and gathered the prophets together at Mount Carmel.	So Ahab sent unto all the children of Israel, and gathered the prophets together unto mount Carmel.	So Ahab sent <i>orders</i> among all the sons of Israel and brought the prophets together at Mount Carmel.	So Ahab sent word throughout all Israel and assembled the prophets on Mount Carmel.
21	Then Elijah approached all the people and said, “How long will you waver between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow Him. But if Baal is God, follow him.” But the people did not answer a word.	And Elijah came near to all the people and said, “How long will you go limping between two different opinions? If the LORD is God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him.” And the people did not answer him a word.	And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two opinions? if the LORD <i>be</i> God, follow him: but if Baal, <i>then</i> follow him. And the people answered him not a word.	Then Elijah approached all the people and said, “How long are you going to struggle with the two choices? If the LORD is God, follow Him; but if Baal, follow him.” But the people did not answer him <i>so much as</i> a word.	Elijah went before the people and said, “How long will you waver between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him.” But the people said nothing.
22	Then Elijah said to the people, “I am the only remaining prophet of the LORD, but Baal has four hundred and fifty prophets.	Then Elijah said to the people, “I, even I only, am left a prophet of the LORD, but Baal’s prophets are 450 men.	Then said Elijah unto the people, I, <i>even</i> I only, remain a prophet of the LORD; but Baal's prophets <i>are</i> four hundred and fifty men.	Then Elijah said to the people, “I alone am left as a prophet of the LORD, while Baal’s prophets are 450 men.	Then Elijah said to them, “I am the only one of the LORD’s prophets left, but Baal has four hundred and fifty prophets.
23	Get two bulls for us. Let the prophets of Baal choose one bull for themselves, cut it into pieces, and place it on the wood but not light the fire. And I will prepare the other bull and place it on the wood but not light the fire.	Let two bulls be given to us, and let them choose one bull for themselves and cut it in pieces and lay it on the wood, but put no fire to it. And I will prepare the other bull and lay it on the wood and put no fire to it.	Let them therefore give us two bullocks; and let them choose one bullock for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay <i>it</i> on wood, and put no fire <i>under</i>: and I will dress the other bullock, and lay <i>it</i> on wood, and put no fire <i>under</i>:	Now have them give us two oxen; and have them choose the one ox for themselves and cut it up, and place it on the wood, but put no fire <i>under it;</i> and I will prepare the other ox and lay it on the wood, and I will not put a fire <i>under it.</i>	Get two bulls for us. 24	Then you may call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the LORD. The God who answers by fire, He is God.” And all the people answered, “What you say is good.”	And you call upon the name of your god, and I will call upon the name of the LORD, and the God who answers by fire, he is God.” And all the people answered, “It is well spoken.”	And call ye on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of the LORD: and the God that answereth by fire, let him be God. And all the people answered and said, It is well spoken.	Then you call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the LORD; and the God who answers by fire, He is God.” And all the people replied, “That is a good idea.”	Then you call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the LORD. The god who answers by fire—he is God.” Then all the people said, “What you say is good.”
25	Then Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, “Since you are so numerous, choose for yourselves one bull and prepare it first. Then call on the name of your god, but do not light the fire.”	Then Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, “Choose for yourselves one bull and prepare it first, for you are many, and call upon the name of your god, but put no fire to it.”	And Elijah said unto the prophets of Baal, Choose you one bullock for yourselves, and dress <i>it</i> first; for ye <i>are</i> many; and call on the name of your gods, but put no fire <i>under</i>.	So Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, “Choose the one ox for yourselves and prepare it first, since <i>there are</i> many <i>of</i> you, and call on the name of your god, but put no fire <i>under the ox.</i>”	Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, “Choose one of the bulls and prepare it first, since there are so many of you. 26	And they took the bull that was given them, prepared it, and called on the name of Baal from morning until noon, shouting, “O Baal, answer us!” But there was no sound, and no one answered as they leaped around the altar they had made. 27	At noon Elijah began to taunt them, saying, “Shout louder, for he is a god! Perhaps he is deep in thought, or occupied, or on a journey. Perhaps he is sleeping and must be awakened!”	And at noon Elijah mocked them, saying, “Cry aloud, for he is a god. Either he is musing, or he is relieving himself, or he is on a journey, or perhaps he is asleep and must be awakened.”	And it came to pass at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and said, Cry aloud: for he <i>is</i> a god; either he is talking, or he is pursuing, or he is in a journey, <i>or</i> peradventure he sleepeth, and must be awaked.	And at noon Elijah ridiculed them and said, “Call out with a loud voice, since he is a god; undoubtedly he is attending to business, or is on the way, or is on a journey. Perhaps he is asleep, and will awaken.”	At noon Elijah began to taunt them. “Shout louder!” he said. “Surely he is a god! Perhaps he is deep in thought, or busy, or traveling. Maybe he is sleeping and must be awakened.”
28	So they shouted louder and cut themselves with knives and lances, as was their custom, until the blood gushed over them.	And they cried aloud and cut themselves after their custom with swords and lances, until the blood gushed out upon them.	And they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lancets, till the blood gushed out upon them.	So they cried out with a loud voice, and cut themselves according to their custom with swords and lances until blood gushed out on them. 29	Midday passed, and they kept on raving until the time of the evening sacrifice. But there was no response; no one answered, no one paid attention.	And as midday passed, they raved on until the time of the offering of the oblation, but there was no voice. No one answered; no one paid attention.	And it came to pass, when midday was past, and they prophesied until the <i>time</i> of the offering of the <i>evening</i> sacrifice, that <i>there was</i> neither voice, nor any to answer, nor any that regarded.	When midday was past, they raved until the time of the offering of the <i>evening</i> sacrifice; but there was no voice, no one answered, and no one paid attention.	Midday passed, and they continued their frantic prophesying until the time for the evening sacrifice. But there was no response, no one answered, no one paid attention.
30	Then Elijah said to all the people, “Come near to me.” So all the people approached him, and he repaired the altar of the LORD that had been torn down.	Then Elijah said to all the people, “Come near to me.” And all the people came near to him. And he repaired the altar of the LORD that had been thrown down. Then he said to them, “Fill four large jars with water and pour it on the offering and on the wood.”
34	and said, “Fill four waterpots and pour the water on the offering and on the wood.” “Do it a second time,” he said, and they did it a second time. “Do it a third time,” he said, and they did it a third time.	And he said, “Do it a second time.” And they did it a second time. And he said, “Do it a third time.” And they did it a third time.	And he said, Do <i>it</i> the second time. And they did <i>it</i> the second time. And he said, Do <i>it</i> the third time. And they did <i>it</i> the third time.	And he said, “Fill four large jars with water and pour <i>it</i> on the burnt offering and on the wood.” And he said, “Do it a second time,” so they did it a second time. Then he said, “Do it a third time,” so they did it a third time.	“Do it again,” he said, and they did it again. “Do it a third time,” he ordered, and they did it the third time.
35	So the water ran down around the altar and even filled the trench.	And the water ran around the altar and filled the trench also with water.	And the water ran round about the altar; and he filled the trench also with water.	The water flowed around the altar, and he also filled the trench with water. 36	At the time of the evening sacrifice, Elijah the prophet approached the altar and said, “O LORD, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that You are God in Israel and that I am Your servant and have done all these things at Your command.	And at the time of the offering of the oblation, Elijah the prophet came near and said, “O LORD, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that you are God in Israel, and that I am your servant, and that I have done all these things at your word.	And it came to pass at <i>the time of</i> the offering of the <i>evening</i> sacrifice, that Elijah the prophet came near, and said, LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that thou <i>art</i> God in Israel, and <i>that</i> I <i>am</i> thy servant, and <i>that</i> I have done all these things at thy word.	Then at the time of the offering of the <i>evening</i> sacrifice, Elijah the prophet approached and said, “LORD, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, today let it be known that You are God in Israel and that I am Your servant, and <i>that</i> I have done all these things at Your word.	At the time of sacrifice, the prophet Elijah stepped forward and prayed: “LORD, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, let it be known today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and have done all these things at your command.
37	Answer me, O LORD! Answer me, so that this people will know that You, the LORD, are God, and that You have turned their hearts back again.”	Answer me, O LORD, answer me, that this people may know that you, O LORD, are God, and that you have turned their hearts back.”	Hear me, O LORD, hear me, that this people may know that thou <i>art</i> the LORD God, and <i>that</i> thou hast turned their heart back again. 38	Then the fire of the LORD fell and consumed the sacrifice, the wood, the stones, and the dust, and it licked up the water in the trench.	Then the fire of the LORD fell and consumed the burnt offering and the wood and the stones and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.	Then the fire of the LORD fell, and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that <i>was</i> in the trench.	Then the fire of the LORD fell and consumed the burnt offering and the wood, and the stones and the dust; and it licked up the water that was in the trench. 39	When all the people saw this, they fell facedown and said, “The LORD, He is God! The LORD, He is God!”	And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces and said, “The LORD, he is God; the LORD, he is God.”	And when all the people saw <i>it</i>, they fell on their faces: and they said, The LORD, he <i>is</i> the God; the LORD, he <i>is</i> the God.	When all the people saw <i>this,</i> they fell on their faces; and they said, “The LORD, He is God; the LORD, He is God!”	When all the people saw this, they fell prostrate and cried, “The LORD—he is God! The LORD—he is God!”
40	Then Elijah ordered them, “Seize the prophets of Baal! Do not let a single one escape.” So they seized them, and Elijah brought them down to the Kishon Valley and slaughtered them there.	And Elijah said to them, “Seize the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape.” And they seized them. And Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon and slaughtered them there.	And Elijah said unto them, Take the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape. And they took them: and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and slew them there.	Then Elijah said to them, “Seize the prophets of Baal; do not let one of them escape.” So they seized them; and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and slaughtered them there.	Then Elijah commanded them, “Seize the prophets of Baal. Don’t let anyone get away!” They seized them, and Elijah had them brought down to the Kishon Valley and slaughtered there.
41	And Elijah said to Ahab, “Go up, eat and drink, for there is the sound of a heavy rain.”	And Elijah said to Ahab, “Go up, eat and drink, for there is a sound of the rushing of rain.”	And Elijah said unto Ahab, Get thee up, eat and drink; for <i>there is</i> a sound of abundance of rain.	Now Elijah said to Ahab, “Go up, eat and drink; for there is the sound of the roar of a <i>heavy</i> shower.”	And Elijah said to Ahab, “Go, eat and drink, for there is the sound of a heavy rain.”
42	So Ahab went up to eat and drink. But Elijah climbed to the summit of Carmel, bent down on the ground, and put his face between his knees.	So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Mount Carmel. And he bowed himself down on the earth and put his face between his knees.	So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he cast himself down upon the earth, and put his face between his knees,	So Ahab went up to eat and drink. But Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he bent down to the earth and put his face between his knees.	So Ahab went off to eat and drink, but Elijah climbed to the top of Carmel, bent down to the ground and put his face between his knees.
43	“Go and look toward the sea,” he said to his servant. So the servant went and looked, and he said, “There is nothing there.” Seven times Elijah said, “Go back.”	And he said to his servant, “Go up now, look toward the sea.” And he went up and looked and said, “There is nothing.” And he said, “Go again,” seven times.	And said to his servant, Go up now, look toward the sea. And he went up, and looked, and said, <i>There is</i> nothing. And he said, Go again seven times.	And he said to his servant, “Go up now, look toward the sea.” So he went up and looked, but he said, “There is nothing.” Yet <i>Elijah</i> said, “Go back” seven times.	“Go and look toward the sea,” he told his servant. And he went up and looked. “There is nothing there,” he said. Seven times Elijah said, “Go back.”
44	On the seventh time the servant reported, “There is a cloud as small as a man’s hand rising from the sea.” And Elijah replied, “Go and tell Ahab, ‘Prepare your chariot and go down before the rain stops you.’ ”	And at the seventh time he said, “Behold, a little cloud like a man’s hand is rising from the sea.” And he said, “Go up, say to Ahab, ‘Prepare your chariot and go down, lest the rain stop you.’”	And it came to pass at the seventh time, that he said, Behold, there ariseth a little cloud out of the sea, like a man's hand. And he said, Go up, say unto Ahab, Prepare <i>thy chariot</i>, and get thee down, that the rain stop thee not.	And <i>when he returned</i> the seventh <i>time,</i> he said, “Behold, a cloud as small as a person’s hand is coming up from the sea.” And <i>Elijah</i> said, “Go up, say to Ahab, ‘Harness <i>your chariot horses</i> and go down, so that the <i>heavy</i> shower does not stop you.’”	The seventh time the servant reported, “A cloud as small as a man’s hand is rising from the sea.” So Elijah said, “Go and tell Ahab, ‘Hitch up your chariot and go down before the rain stops you.’”
45	Meanwhile, the sky grew dark with clouds and wind, and a heavy rain began to fall. So Ahab rode away and went to Jezreel.	And in a little while the heavens grew black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode and went to Jezreel.	And it came to pass in the mean while, that the heaven was black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode, and went to Jezreel.	Meanwhile the sky became dark with clouds and wind <i>came up,</i> and there was a heavy shower. And Ahab rode and went to Jezreel.	Meanwhile, the sky grew black with clouds, the wind rose, a heavy rain started falling and Ahab rode off to Jezreel.
46	And the hand of the LORD came upon Elijah, and he tucked his cloak into his belt and ran ahead of Ahab all the way to Jezreel.	And the hand of the LORD was on Elijah, and he gathered up his garment and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.	And the hand of the LORD was on Elijah; and he girded up his loins, and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.	Then the hand of the LORD was on Elijah, and he belted <i>his cloak</i> around his waist and outran Ahab to Jezreel.	The power of the LORD came on Elijah and, tucking his cloak into his belt, he ran ahead of Ahab all the way to Jezreel.
