1 This is what the Lord GOD showed me: I saw a basket of summer fruit. This is what the Lord GOD showed me: behold, a basket of summer fruit. Thus hath the Lord GOD shewed unto me: and behold a basket of summer fruit. This is what the Lord GOD showed me, and behold, <i>there was</i> a basket of summer fruit. This is what the Sovereign LORD showed me: a basket of ripe fruit.
2 “Amos, what do you see?” He asked. “A basket of summer fruit,” I replied. So the LORD said to me, “The end has come for My people Israel; I will no longer spare them.” And he said, “Amos, what do you see?” And I said, “A basket of summer fruit.” Then the LORD said to me, “The end has come upon my people Israel; I will never again pass by them. And he said, Amos, what seest thou? And I said, A basket of summer fruit. Then said the LORD unto me, The end is come upon my people of Israel; I will not again pass by them any more. And He said, “What do you see, Amos?” And I said, “A basket of summer fruit.” Then the LORD said to me, “The end has come for My people Israel. I will not spare them any longer. “What do you see, Amos?” he asked. “A basket of ripe fruit,” I answered. Then the LORD said to me, “The time is ripe for my people Israel; I will spare them no longer.
3 “In that day,” declares the Lord GOD, “the songs of the temple will turn to wailing. Many will be the corpses, strewn in silence everywhere!” The songs of the temple shall become wailings in that day,” declares the Lord GOD. “So many dead bodies!” “They are thrown everywhere!” “Silence!” And the songs of the temple shall be howlings in that day, saith the Lord GOD: <i>there shall be</i> many dead bodies in every place; they shall cast <i>them</i> forth with silence. The songs of the palace will turn to wailing on that day,” declares the Lord GOD. “The corpses <i>will be</i> many; in every place they will throw them out. Hush!” “In that day,” declares the Sovereign LORD, “the songs in the temple will turn to wailing. Many, many bodies—flung everywhere! Silence!”
4 Hear this, you who trample the needy, who do away with the poor of the land, Hear this, you who trample on the needy and bring the poor of the land to an end, Hear this, O ye that swallow up the needy, even to make the poor of the land to fail, Hear this, you who trample the needy, to put an end to the humble of the land, Hear this, you who trample the needy and do away with the poor of the land,
5 asking, “When will the New Moon be over, that we may sell grain? When will the Sabbath end, that we may market wheat? Let us reduce the ephah and increase the shekel; let us cheat with dishonest scales. saying, “When will the new moon be over, that we may sell grain? And the Sabbath, that we may offer wheat for sale, that we may make the ephah small and the shekel great and deal deceitfully with false balances, Saying, When will the new moon be gone, that we may sell corn? and the sabbath, that we may set forth wheat, making the ephah small, and the shekel great, and falsifying the balances by deceit? saying, “When will the new moon be over, So that we may sell grain; And the Sabbath, so that we may open the wheat <i>market,</i> To make the ephah smaller and the shekel bigger, And to cheat with dishonest scales, saying, “When will the New Moon be over that we may sell grain, and the Sabbath be ended that we may market wheat?|— skimping on the measure, boosting the price and cheating with dishonest scales,
6 Let us buy the poor with silver and the needy for a pair of sandals, selling even the chaff with the wheat!” that we may buy the poor for silver and the needy for a pair of sandals and sell the chaff of the wheat?” That we may buy the poor for silver, and the needy for a pair of shoes; <i>yea</i>, and sell the refuse of the wheat? So as to buy the helpless for money, And the needy for a pair of sandals, And <i>that</i> we may sell the refuse of the wheat?” buying the poor with silver and the needy for a pair of sandals, selling even the sweepings with the wheat.
7 The LORD has sworn by the Pride of Jacob: “I will never forget any of their deeds. The LORD has sworn by the pride of Jacob: “Surely I will never forget any of their deeds. The LORD hath sworn by the excellency of Jacob, Surely I will never forget any of their works. The LORD has sworn by the pride of Jacob, “Indeed, I will never forget any of their deeds. The LORD has sworn by himself, the Pride of Jacob: “I will never forget anything they have done.
8 Will not the land quake for this, and all its dwellers mourn? All of it will swell like the Nile; it will surge and then subside like the Nile in Egypt. Shall not the land tremble on this account, and everyone mourn who dwells in it, and all of it rise like the Nile, and be tossed about and sink again, like the Nile of Egypt?” Shall not the land tremble for this, and every one mourn that dwelleth therein? and it shall rise up wholly as a flood; and it shall be cast out and drowned, as <i>by</i> the flood of Egypt. “Because of this will the land not quake, And everyone who lives in it mourn? Indeed, all of it will rise up like the Nile, And it will be tossed about And subside like the Nile of Egypt. “Will not the land tremble for this, and all who live in it mourn? The whole land will rise like the Nile; it will be stirred up and then sink like the river of Egypt.
9 And in that day, declares the Lord GOD, I will make the sun go down at noon, and I will darken the earth in the daytime. “And on that day,” declares the Lord GOD, “I will make the sun go down at noon and darken the earth in broad daylight. And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the Lord GOD, that I will cause the sun to go down at noon, and I will darken the earth in the clear day: “And it will come about on that day,” declares the Lord GOD, “That I will make the sun go down at noon, And make the earth dark in broad daylight. “In that day,” declares the Sovereign LORD, “I will make the sun go down at noon and darken the earth in broad daylight.
10 I will turn your feasts into mourning and all your songs into lamentation. I will cause everyone to wear sackcloth and every head to be shaved. I will make it like a time of mourning for an only son, and its outcome like a bitter day. I will turn your feasts into mourning and all your songs into lamentation; I will bring sackcloth on every waist and baldness on every head; I will make it like the mourning for an only son and the end of it like a bitter day. And I will turn your feasts into mourning, and all your songs into lamentation; and I will bring up sackcloth upon all loins, and baldness upon every head; and I will make it as the mourning of an only <i>son</i>, and the end thereof as a bitter day. “Then I will turn your festivals into mourning, And all your songs into songs of mourning; And I will put sackcloth around everyone’s waist, And baldness on every head. And I will make it like <i>a time of</i> mourning for an only son, And the end of it will be like a bitter day. I will turn your religious festivals into mourning and all your singing into weeping. I will make all of you wear sackcloth and shave your heads. I will make that time like mourning for an only son and the end of it like a bitter day.
11 Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord GOD, when I will send a famine on the land— not a famine of bread or a thirst for water, but a famine of hearing the words of the LORD. “Behold, the days are coming,” declares the Lord GOD, “when I will send a famine on the land— not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD. Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD: “Behold, days are coming,” declares the Lord GOD, “When I will send a famine on the land, Not a famine of bread or a thirst for water, But rather for hearing the words of the LORD. “The days are coming,” declares the Sovereign LORD, “when I will send a famine through the land— not a famine of food or a thirst for water, but a famine of hearing the words of the LORD.
12 People will stagger from sea to sea and roam from north to east, seeking the word of the LORD, but they will not find it. They shall wander from sea to sea, and from north to east; they shall run to and fro, to seek the word of the LORD, but they shall not find it. And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the LORD, and shall not find <i>it</i>. “People will stagger from sea to sea And from the north even to the east; They will roam about to seek the word of the LORD, But they will not find <i>it.</i> People will stagger from sea to sea and wander from north to east, searching for the word of the LORD, but they will not find it.
13 In that day the lovely young women— the young men as well— will faint from thirst. “In that day the lovely virgins and the young men shall faint for thirst. In that day shall the fair virgins and young men faint for thirst. “On that day the beautiful virgins And the young men will faint from thirst. “In that day “the lovely young women and strong young men will faint because of thirst.
14 Those who swear by the guilt of Samaria and say, ‘As surely as your god lives, O Dan,’ or, ‘As surely as the way of Beersheba lives’— they will fall, never to rise again.” Those who swear by the Guilt of Samaria, and say, ‘As your god lives, O Dan,’ and, ‘As the Way of Beersheba lives,’ they shall fall, and never rise again.” They that swear by the sin of Samaria, and say, Thy god, O Dan, liveth; and, The manner of Beersheba liveth; even they shall fall, and never rise up again. “<i>As for</i> those who swear by the guilt of Samaria, And say, ‘As your god lives, Dan,’ And, ‘As the way of Beersheba lives,’ They will fall and not rise again.” Those who swear by the sin of Samaria— who say, ‘As surely as your god lives, Dan,’ or, ‘As surely as the god of Beersheba lives’— they will fall, never to rise again.”
