Align actions with God's will, not self?
How can we ensure our actions align with God's will, not personal desires?

Setting the Scene

• God’s clear command: “Now go and strike down the Amalekites and devote to destruction all that they have” (1 Samuel 15:3).

• Saul’s response: “The troops brought them from the Amalekites and spared the best sheep and cattle to sacrifice to the LORD your God, but the rest we devoted to destruction” (1 Samuel 15:15).

• Saul thought a partial obedience—keeping what appealed to him—could still please God if wrapped in religious language.

Where Saul Went Wrong

• He redefined obedience (v. 15): kept the best livestock, excused it as worship.

• He trusted human reasoning over divine instruction (cf. Proverbs 3:5–6).

• He sought public approval (soldiers, spoils) more than God’s approval (1 Samuel 15:24).

• Samuel’s verdict: “To obey is better than sacrifice” (1 Samuel 15:22).

Principles for Aligning Our Actions with God’s Will

• Obedience precedes worship

– True worship flows from doing what God says, not what we prefer (John 14:15).

• Wholehearted obedience, not selective

– Partial compliance equals disobedience (James 2:10).

• Scripture as final authority

– God’s word defines right and wrong, not feelings or culture (Psalm 119:105).

• Spirit-guided living

– “Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh” (Galatians 5:16).

• Renewed mind

– Let truth reshape desires so they align with His (Romans 12:1-2).

Practical Steps for Today

1. Daily Scripture intake

• Read, meditate, and memorize; let His commands set the agenda for the day.

2. Immediate obedience

• Act promptly when God’s word or Spirit convicts—delay breeds compromise.

3. Honest motive checks

• Ask: Am I seeking God’s glory or personal benefit? (Colossians 3:17).

4. Accountability

• Invite mature believers to speak truth when motives drift (Hebrews 10:24-25).

5. Prayerful submission

• Continually yield plans to God, ready to adjust when His word corrects them (Psalm 143:10).

Encouraging Promises to Remember

• “Commit your works to the LORD and your plans will be achieved” (Proverbs 16:3).

• “The LORD will fulfill His purpose for me” (Psalm 138:8).

• “He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus” (Philippians 1:6).

Wholehearted obedience—rooted in Scripture, led by the Spirit, confirmed by godly counsel—guards us from Saul’s mistake and keeps our actions aligned with God’s perfect will.
