Proverbs 16
1. The Plans of the heart

Commit your works to the LORD
This phrase emphasizes the importance of entrusting one's actions and endeavors to God. In the biblical context, "commit" implies a complete surrender and trust in God's sovereignty. The Hebrew word used here can be translated as "roll," suggesting the idea of rolling one's burdens onto the Lord. This concept is echoed in Psalm 37:5, which also encourages believers to trust in God for the fulfillment of their desires. The cultural context of ancient Israel was one where reliance on God was central to daily life, and this verse reinforces the idea that success is ultimately dependent on divine guidance and blessing. The act of committing one's works to the Lord is a demonstration of faith and acknowledgment of His ultimate authority over all aspects of life.

and your plans will be achieved
This promise highlights the result of committing one's works to God: the successful realization of one's plans. The assurance given here is not a guarantee of success in every human endeavor but rather an alignment of one's plans with God's will, leading to their fulfillment. This aligns with the broader biblical teaching that when believers seek God's kingdom and righteousness first, all other things will be added to them (Matthew 6:33). The historical context of this proverb reflects a worldview where divine favor was seen as essential for prosperity and success. Theologically, this phrase underscores the belief that God is actively involved in the lives of His people, guiding and directing their paths. It also points to the idea that true success is found in living according to God's purposes, which ultimately leads to the fulfillment of one's plans in a way that honors Him.

Teaching Points
Commitment to God
The Hebrew word for "commit" (gol) implies rolling away or entrusting something entirely. This suggests a total surrender of our plans and actions to God, trusting Him with the outcome.

Divine Partnership
Our plans are not to be made in isolation from God. Instead, we are called to partner with Him, seeking His guidance and blessing in all our endeavors.

Trust in God's Sovereignty
By committing our works to the Lord, we acknowledge His ultimate control and wisdom, trusting that He will align our plans with His perfect will.

Practical Faith
This verse encourages a faith that is active and practical, where our daily tasks and long-term goals are placed under God's authority.

Peace in Planning
When we commit our works to God, we can experience peace, knowing that He is in control and that our plans are in His hands.(3) Commit thy works unto the Lord.--Literally, roll them upon Him, as a burden too heavy to be borne by thyself. "Thy works" signify all that thou hast to do. (Comp. Psalm 37:5.) God provides such works for us. (Comp. Ephesians 2:10.)

And thy thoughts shall be established.--Thy plans shall prosper, for they will be undertaken according to the will of God, and carried out by His aid. (Comp. 1Corinthians 3:9; 2Corinthians 6:1.)

Verse 3. - Commit thy works unto the Lord. "Commit" (gol) is literally "roll" (κύλισον, Theodotion), as in Psalm 22:8 and Psalm 37:5; and the injunction means, "Transfer thy burden to the Lord, cast upon him all that thou hast to do; do all as in his sight, and as an act of duty to him." Thus Tobit says to his son, "Bless the Lord thy God alway, and desire of him that thy ways may be directed, and that all thy paths and counsels may prosper" (Tobit 4:19). The Vulgate, using a different punctuation (gal), renders, "Reveal to the Lord thy works?' As a child opens its heart to a tender parent, so do thou show to God thy desires and intentions, trusting to his care and providence. And thy thoughts shall be established. The plans and deliberations out of which the "works" sprang shall meet with a happy fulfilment, because they are undertaken according to the will of God, and directed to the end by his guidance (comp. Proverbs 19:21; Psalm 90:17; 1 Corinthians 3:9). This verse is not in the Septuagint.
