Align decisions with God's will?
How can we ensure our decisions align with God's will, as seen here?

Framing the Moment

“So Moses gave to the Gadites, the Reubenites, and half the tribe of Manasseh son of Joseph the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan—the land together with its cities and the territory surrounding them.” (Numbers 32:33)

What We See in Numbers 32

• Reuben, Gad, and half-Manasseh request land east of the Jordan for their livestock (vv. 1–5).

• Moses warns that selfish motives could discourage Israel (vv. 6–15).

• The tribes pledge to fight with their brothers until God’s mission is finished (vv. 16–19).

• Only after their motives, commitment, and accountability are clear does Moses agree—leading to the land grant in v. 33.

Principles for God-Aligned Decisions

• Stay inside God’s revealed plan

 – God had already promised the whole land of Canaan; the eastern tribes refuse to abandon that mission.

 – Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in the LORD … in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.”

• Submit your motives to inspection

 – Moses probes their hearts (32:6-15).

 – Psalm 139:23-24: “Search me, O God, and know my heart … lead me in the way everlasting.”

• Invite wise, spiritual counsel

 – The tribes bring their desire to Moses and Eleazar, not acting alone.

 – Proverbs 15:22: “Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.”

• Prioritize unity and service over personal comfort

 – They agree to fight on the front lines until every tribe receives its inheritance (32:17-18).

 – Romans 14:19: “So then, let us pursue what leads to peace and to mutual edification.”

• Anchor every commitment to clear obedience

 – Moses says, “If you do this … cross over armed… then you will be innocent” (32:20-22).

 – James 1:22: “Be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.”

• Remember God hears every vow

 – Numbers 32:23: “But if you do not do this, you will certainly sin against the LORD—and be assured that your sin will find you out.”

 – Ecclesiastes 5:5: “It is better that you should not vow than that you should vow and not fulfill it.”

• Measure decisions by Scripture’s light

 – Psalm 119:105: “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

 – If the Word condemns or contradicts a plan, the plan is off-limits.

• Seek God’s wisdom in prayerful dependence

 – James 1:5: “If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God… and it will be given to him.”

 – Prayer is not a last resort; it is the decision-making environment.

• Aim for Christ-honoring outcomes

 – Colossians 3:17: “Whatever you do… do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus.”

 – Ask, “Will this decision display His character and advance His kingdom?”

Putting It All Together

1. Open the Bible first, not last.

2. Lay out your motives before God and trusted believers.

3. Listen for any red flags that conflict with Scripture or harm unity.

4. Commit only to what you will joyfully finish.

5. Move forward in faith, expecting His peace to confirm the path (Philippians 4:6-7).

When decisions flow through these filters, we become like those eastern tribes—bold enough to pursue what seems best for our families yet humble enough to keep step with God’s larger purposes.
