Align leaders with God's truth?
How can we ensure our leaders align with God's truth, like in Jeremiah 14:13?

Setting the Scene

“Ah, Lord GOD,” I replied, “Look, the prophets are telling them, ‘You will not see the sword or suffer famine. Instead, I will give you lasting peace in this place.’ ” (Jeremiah 14:13)

God immediately answers that these prophets speak lies (14:14-16). In one brief exchange He exposes the danger of leaders who sound spiritual yet contradict His Word.

Key Truths from Jeremiah 14

• A soothing message is not proof of divine origin.

• God’s written revelation remains the measuring stick for every leader.

• False guidance brings real judgment on both messenger and hearer.

Scriptural Tests for Leaders

1. Agreement with Scripture

• “All Scripture is God-breathed and profitable… so that the man of God may be complete.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

2. Verifiable accuracy

• “If the word does not come to pass… that is a word the LORD has not spoken.” (Deuteronomy 18:22)

3. Godly fruit

• “You will recognize them by their fruit.” (Matthew 7:16)

4. Humble accountability

• “Plans succeed with many advisers.” (Proverbs 15:22)

Practical Ways to Guard Against Deception

• Keep an open Bible while listening, following the Bereans who “examined the Scriptures daily.” (Acts 17:11)

• Measure life and teaching by 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:6-9.

• Expect repentance when sin surfaces (Proverbs 24:16).

• “Test all things; hold fast to what is good.” (1 Thessalonians 5:21)

• Insist that leadership structures include shared oversight and transparent stewardship (Hebrews 13:17).

• Watch for a cross-centered message, not a personality-centered brand (1 Corinthians 2:2).

Building a Culture of Discernment

• Grow Bible literacy through systematic reading.

• Foster respectful, Scripture-anchored dialogue so concerns can be raised early.

• Honor leaders who prize exposition and servant-hearted living over applause.

• Continually seek the Spirit’s gift of discernment (1 Corinthians 12:10).

Encouragement to Stay the Course

The Lord equips His people to recognize truth from error. By holding every leader to the unchanging Word, believers remain anchored as “the pillar and foundation of the truth.” (1 Timothy 3:15)
