Align with God, not worldly comforts?
How can we align our lives with God's will instead of worldly comforts?

The Illusion of Worldly Comforts

Luke 12:19 captures the voice of the rich fool: “Then I will say to myself, ‘You have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take it easy, eat, drink, and be merry.’”

• Worldly comfort whispers, “You’ve earned this—relax and indulge.”

• God responds, “You fool!” (v. 20), exposing how fragile earthly security really is.

Why God’s Will Matters More

• Only God’s will endures (1 John 2:17).

• His plans give real hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11).

• Life is a mist; eternity is certain (James 4:14).

Recognizing the Warning in Luke 12:19

The rich man:

• Placed faith in possessions, not in God.

• Spoke only to himself—prayerless, self-absorbed.

• Planned for years but ignored the possibility of tonight.

We’re invited to reverse every one of those mistakes.

Steps to Align Our Lives with God’s Will

• Pursue Kingdom first: “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33)

• Offer yourself daily: “Present your bodies as a living sacrifice… Do not be conformed to this world.” (Romans 12:1-2)

• Cultivate holy contentment: “Godliness with contentment is great gain… if we have food and clothing, we will be content with these.” (1 Timothy 6:6-8)

• Store heavenly treasure: “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth… but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven.” (Matthew 6:19-20)

• Give generously: “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” (Acts 20:35)

Practices for Daily Alignment

• Scripture intake—read, meditate, obey (Psalm 119:11).

• Consistent prayer—aligns heart with God’s heart (Philippians 4:6-7).

• Fellowship and accountability—“spur one another on toward love and good deeds” (Hebrews 10:24-25).

• Sabbath rhythms—rest in God, not in indulgence (Mark 2:27).

• Gratitude journaling—reminds us of God’s faithful provision.

Evaluating Our Priorities

Ask, “Will this matter in ten thousand years?”

• How we handle money (Luke 16:11).

• How we invest time (Ephesians 5:15-16).

• How we use talents (1 Peter 4:10).

If the answer honors Christ, keep going. If not, surrender and adjust.

Encouragement and Assurance

• God knows our needs before we ask (Matthew 6:8).

• He richly provides “all things for our enjoyment” when we look to Him first (1 Timothy 6:17).

• When Christ appears, “you also will appear with Him in glory” (Colossians 3:4).

Fix your eyes there, and worldly comforts lose their grip.

What does 'take life easy; eat, drink, and be merry' reveal about priorities?
