Align worship with Bible today?
How can we ensure our worship aligns with biblical teachings today?

Setting the Scene with 1 Kings 12:33

“So he offered sacrifices on the altar he had made in Bethel on the fifteenth day of the eighth month — a month he had devised in his own heart. In this manner he instituted a festival for the Israelites and went up to the altar to burn incense.”

Jeroboam rearranged dates, places, and priesthood to fit his own agenda. The verse pinpoints a worship model built on personal preference rather than God’s revealed pattern.

What Went Wrong? Key Observations

• “A month he had devised in his own heart” — self-made timing (compare Leviticus 23 for God’s calendar).

• “The altar he had made in Bethel” — self-chosen location (contrast Deuteronomy 12:5).

• “He instituted a festival” — self-created ritual (see Exodus 20:3-4).

• Result: an entire nation pulled into counterfeit worship.

Timeless Principles for Worship

1. God, not culture, sets the pattern (Deuteronomy 12:32; John 4:24).

2. True worship centers on revealed truth, not human creativity (Isaiah 8:20; Colossians 3:16).

3. Adding or subtracting from God’s directives creates confusion and judgment (Leviticus 10:1-2; Mark 7:6-8).

4. The heart still matters, but only when submitted to Scripture (Psalm 51:17; Hebrews 12:28-29).

Bringing It Home Today

Ask of every worship practice:

• Does it exalt the Triune God or human experience?

• Is it anchored in clear biblical teaching or popular trends?

• Does it point to Christ’s finished work (Hebrews 10:19-22) or distract with novelty?

• Is the congregation guided by the Word (1 Timothy 4:13) or by entertainment demands?

Practical Steps to Guard True Worship

• Keep Scripture central: read, teach, and sing it (Nehemiah 8:8; Colossians 3:16).

• Evaluate songs and liturgy against biblical doctrine (Titus 2:1).

• Celebrate the Lord’s Supper and baptism as ordained, not as mere symbolism but as commanded acts (Matthew 28:19-20; 1 Corinthians 11:23-26).

• Foster reverence and order, avoiding chaos disguised as freedom (1 Corinthians 14:40).

• Encourage shepherds who model submission to the Word, resisting the temptation to “devise” new calendars, rituals, or theological shortcuts (1 Peter 5:2-3).

• Pray for discernment and unity, so that corporate gatherings reflect heaven’s pattern rather than Jeroboam’s invention (Revelation 4:8-11).

When worship flows from God’s revealed truth, it honors Him, nourishes His people, and stands firm against every age’s temptation to redesign what He has already perfected.

Why is it important to worship as God commands, not as we desire?
