How can we apply the diligence shown in Jeremiah 36:12 to our Bible study? Setting the Scene: Jeremiah 36:12 “he went down to the king’s palace, to the chamber of the scribe. There all the officials were sitting—Elishama the scribe, Delaiah son of Shemaiah, Elnathan son of Achbor, Gemariah son of Shaphan, Zedekiah son of Hananiah, and all the officials.” Micaiah had just heard Baruch read Jeremiah’s scroll. Instead of keeping the message to himself, he rushed to a place where the people who could act on it were gathered. His eagerness models the diligence God desires in everyone who handles His word. What Diligence Looks Like in the Passage • Prompt action—he “went down” immediately. • Purposeful location—he chose the chamber where key leaders were already assembled. • Prepared audience—officials who valued written records and truth. • Persistent concern—he stayed until the full matter was addressed (vv. 13–19). Translating That Diligence into Our Own Study • Prioritize Scripture first. – Schedule it early in the day or in the week before other voices crowd in (Psalm 119:147). • Move quickly from hearing to sharing. – Speak about fresh insights with family, friends, small groups (Deuteronomy 6:6-7). • Gather with serious students. – Choose study partners who, like the officials, care about accuracy (Acts 17:11). • Seek out reliable sources. – Use trustworthy commentaries and teachers, but weigh everything by the text itself (1 John 4:1). • Record what God shows you. – Keep a journal; note key verses, questions answered, and applications (Habakkuk 2:2). • Follow through until obedience is complete. – Ask: “Have I actually done what this passage calls me to do?” (James 1:22-25). Guardrails That Keep Diligence on Track • Avoid procrastination—spiritual momentum wanes quickly. • Reject mere intellectualism—the goal is transformation, not information (Romans 12:2). • Beware isolation—private study flourishes when balanced by fellowship (Hebrews 10:24-25). • Confess distractions—bring wandering thoughts captive to Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5). Encouragement from Other Passages • 2 Timothy 2:15: “Make every effort to present yourself approved to God…” • Proverbs 2:1-5: diligence in seeking wisdom is rewarded with knowledge of God. • Joshua 1:8: meditation “day and night” leads to prosperity and success. Diligence, then, is an active, intentional pursuit—prompt, communal, and obedient—modeled by Micaiah’s quick step down to the palace and perfected as we consistently step into the living word ourselves. |
