How can we apply Jesus' definition of family to our church relationships? Jesus’ Radically Expanded Family “‘Who are My mother and My brothers?’” (Mark 3:33) Jesus immediately adds, “Here are My mother and My brothers! Whoever does God’s will is My brother and sister and mother.” (Mark 3:34-35) Obedience Creates Kinship • Doing the Father’s will is the only entrance requirement (Matthew 12:50; Luke 8:21). • This is a literal, not symbolic, bond. We truly become “born of God” (John 1:12-13). • The church is now “fellow citizens with the saints and members of God’s household” (Ephesians 2:19). Why It Matters in the Local Church • Spiritual family ties are eternal; biological ones may not be (Luke 20:34-36). • Healthy churches mirror the early believers who were “together and had everything in common” (Acts 2:44). • Loving fellow believers confirms genuine faith (1 John 3:14). Living as Family—Practical Steps Know one another intentionally • Learn names, stories, and needs (Romans 12:15). • Spend time beyond corporate worship—meals, walks, projects (Acts 2:46). Care for one another sacrificially • Share resources so no one lacks (Acts 4:34-35). • Offer practical help: childcare, rides, repairs (Galatians 6:10). Speak to one another spiritually • “Encourage one another daily” (Hebrews 3:13). • Correct with gentleness, like family elders and siblings (1 Timothy 5:1-2). Stand with one another through trials • Visit the sick, comfort the grieving (2 Corinthians 1:4). • Rejoice at victories, mourn at losses—together (Romans 12:15). Forgive and reconcile quickly • Refuse bitterness; pursue peace (Ephesians 4:32). • Handle conflicts within the family circle before outsiders (Matthew 18:15-17). Gather consistently • Do “not neglect meeting together” (Hebrews 10:25). • Prioritize worship and fellowship over competing commitments. Pray and serve together • Carry one another’s burdens in prayer (James 5:16). • Combine gifts for kingdom work (1 Peter 4:10). Guarding Against Missteps • Neglecting biological family: Scripture still commands honor (Mark 7:10-13; 1 Timothy 5:8). • Forming cliques: family love must cross ages, cultures, and backgrounds (James 2:1-4). • Surface-level fellowship: coffee-hour small talk is no substitute for shared life (1 Thessalonians 2:8). Blessings Promised to Spiritual Families • “God sets the lonely in families” (Psalm 68:6). • “A hundredfold now… and in the age to come eternal life” (Mark 10:29-30). • The watching world is drawn when it sees disciples loving as true siblings (John 13:35). |
