Apply Matt 7:20 to assess leaders?
How can we apply Matthew 7:20 in evaluating spiritual leaders today?

Starting with Jesus’ Standard

“So then, by their fruit you will recognize them.” (Matthew 7:20)

What Counts as “Fruit” Today?

• Personal character that mirrors Christ (Galatians 5:22-23)

• Sound, Bible-faithful doctrine (Titus 2:1)

• Lifestyle integrity—public and private (1 Timothy 3:2-7)

• Servant-hearted love for people (John 13:34-35)

• Enduring impact that glorifies God, not self (1 Corinthians 3:12-14)

Practical Fruit-Inspection Steps

1. Compare their teaching with Scripture, not charisma.

 • Acts 17:11—“they examined the Scriptures daily to see if these teachings were true.”

2. Observe long-term behavior, not isolated moments.

 • 1 John 3:7—“The one who practices righteousness is righteous.”

3. Listen for humility and repentance when wrong.

 • James 4:6—“God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

4. Check relationships: family, team, congregation.

 • 1 Timothy 3:5—leadership at home proves readiness for God’s household.

5. Look at stewardship of money and influence.

 • 1 Peter 5:2—“not greedy for money, but eager to serve.”

6. Evaluate the fruit of followers. Healthy trees reproduce healthy trees.

Scriptural Cross-Checks

• Matthew 12:33—“Make a tree good and its fruit will be good.”

• 2 Corinthians 11:13-15—appearance can deceive; fruit unmasks.

• 1 Thessalonians 5:21—“Test all things; hold fast to what is good.”

• Hebrews 13:7—imitate leaders whose “way of life” confirms their message.

Common Pitfalls to Avoid

• Confusing popularity with fruitfulness.

• Excusing moral failure because of gifting.

• Judging by single snapshots instead of consistent patterns.

• Becoming cynical—scripture calls for testing, not suspicion of everyone.

Living It Out Together

Settle your own heart on Scripture’s authority. Stay in close fellowship where lives are visible. When leaders show good fruit, honor and follow joyfully (Hebrews 13:17). When fruit proves bad, step back, warn others, and cling to the Shepherd who never fails (John 10:27-28).
