Applying God's holiness in community?
How can we apply the holiness of God in our community interactions?

Opening the Text

“You are not to profane My holy name, and I will be sanctified among the Israelites. I am the LORD who sanctifies you.” (Leviticus 22:32)

Holiness Defined

• God’s holiness is His absolute moral purity and complete otherness.

• “Sanctifies” points to His work of setting His people apart. We do not create holiness; we receive and display it.

• Because His name is tied to His people, their conduct either honors or profanes Him.

Why Holiness Matters in Community

• “In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16)

• “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation…” (1 Peter 2:9)

• Our visible holiness leads others to glorify God, not us.

Practical Ways to Reflect God’s Holiness in Everyday Interactions

Speech

• “Let no unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building up…” (Ephesians 4:29)

• Replace sarcasm, gossip, and crude humor with words that strengthen.

Integrity

• “You must not steal; you must not lie….” (Leviticus 19:11)

• Pay fair wages, keep promises, avoid corner-cutting at work.

Compassion & Forgiveness

• “Clothe yourselves with hearts of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.” (Colossians 3:12-14)

• Move toward the hurting; let go of grudges.

Conflict Resolution

• “If your brother sins against you, go and confront him privately.” (Matthew 18:15)

• Address issues face-to-face rather than venting to others.

Purity

• “For it is God’s will that you should be holy: You must abstain from sexual immorality.” (1 Thessalonians 4:3-4)

• Guard internet use, entertainment choices, dating boundaries.

Justice & Mercy

• “Act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with your God.” (Micah 6:8)

• Stand with the vulnerable; refuse prejudice; use influence for fair treatment.

Generosity

• “No one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they shared everything they owned.” (Acts 4:32)

• Budget to give; open your home; share skills and time.

Guarding Against Profaning His Name

• Hypocrisy—saying one thing, living another.

• Partiality—favoring the powerful or popular.

• Cynicism—mocking righteousness, excusing sin as “normal life.”

The Power Source for Holiness

• “Remain in Me… apart from Me you can do nothing.” (John 15:4-5)

• “Since we live by the Spirit, let us walk in step with the Spirit.” (Galatians 5:22-25)

• Dependence on Christ and the Spirit produces fruit we cannot manufacture.

Holiness and Corporate Witness

• Our gatherings, service projects, and online presence preach before a word is spoken.

• Church discipline done biblically protects the reputation of Christ and restores wanderers.

• Reverent, joyful worship showcases a God worth knowing.

Closing Takeaways

• God’s holiness is both the standard and the gift: He sanctifies us.

• Daily choices in speech, integrity, compassion, purity, justice, and generosity make His name unmistakably beautiful to our neighbors.

• A Spirit-empowered community that refuses to profane God’s name becomes a beacon, drawing others to the Holy One who still sanctifies.
