Applying ancient victories to today?
How can we apply the victory over the kings to spiritual battles today?

Setting the Scene: Joshua 12:18 in Context

“the king of Aphek, one; the king of Lasharon, one;” (Joshua 12:18)

Joshua 12 is a literal record of thirty-one defeated Canaanite kings. Verse 18 names two of them, a brief line reminding us that each victory was real, specific, and complete.

Why These Ancient Victories Still Matter

• They prove God’s faithfulness to every promise (Joshua 1:3-5).

• They expose the utter weakness of opposing powers when God fights (Deuteronomy 7:23-24).

• They model the believer’s present conflict, not against flesh and blood, but against spiritual forces (Ephesians 6:12).

Recognizing Our Present Battlefield

• Sinful desires (Galatians 5:17)

• Worldly pressures (1 John 2:15-17)

• The devil’s schemes (1 Peter 5:8)

Though invisible, these foes are no less real than the kings toppled by Israel.

Identifying the “Kings” We Face

Just as Aphek and Lasharon were named, our strongholds need names:

– Fear that paralyzes obedience

– Bitterness that poisons relationships

– Lust that blinds spiritual sight

– Pride that resists correction

When a sin pattern is labeled, it is targeted for overthrow.

Standing in the Conqueror’s Authority

• “We are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.” (Romans 8:37)

• “Greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world.” (1 John 4:4)

Christ’s finished work is the ground on which every battle is fought and won.

Wielding the Spiritual Weapons

Ephesians 6:10-18 lays out the armor. Apply it deliberately:

1. Belt of truth – anchor every thought to Scripture.

2. Breastplate of righteousness – live in daily repentance and holiness.

3. Shoes of peace – move forward in reconciliation, not strife.

4. Shield of faith – extinguish lies with God’s promises.

5. Helmet of salvation – guard the mind with assurance of redemption.

6. Sword of the Spirit – speak the Word aloud against temptation.

7. Prayer in the Spirit – maintain constant communication with Headquarters.

Celebrating Each Daily Victory

Joshua counted kings; we count answered prayers, broken chains, renewed minds. Keep a record:

• Date the breakthrough.

• Note the Scripture that carried you.

• Praise God specifically, just as Israel remembered each fallen king.

Looking to the Ultimate King

Every Canaanite crown on Israel’s ledger foreshadows the day when “The kingdoms of the world have become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ” (Revelation 11:15). Until that final triumph, each personal victory echoes Joshua 12:18—one more “king” down, proof that the battle belongs to the Lord.

How does Joshua 12:18 connect with God's command in Deuteronomy 7:24?
