How can we apply the concept of divine inheritance in our lives today? Setting the Scene “Lachish, Bozkath, Eglon,” (Joshua 15:39). These three place-names appear in the long catalog of territory given to Judah. Every town was a concrete reminder that God keeps His promises—land, boundaries, a future. Their inheritance was real, visible, and irrevocably theirs. Divine Inheritance Defined • For Israel: tangible land allotted by God (Genesis 12:7; Joshua 14:1–5). • For believers today: every spiritual blessing secured in Christ—yet also a coming kingdom we will physically share (Ephesians 1:3; Matthew 5:5; Revelation 21:7). • The same God who handed Judah cities hands us far more: Himself. Foundational Truths About Our Inheritance • Sealed by the Spirit—guaranteed, not tentative (Ephesians 1:13-14). • Imperishable, undefiled, unfading, reserved in heaven (1 Peter 1:3-5). • We are “heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ” (Romans 8:17). • The Father “has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the light” (Colossians 1:12). Living as Heirs Today 1. Walk the borders—know what is yours. – Daily read Scripture to discover promises (Psalm 16:6). 2. Guard the territory. – Flee sin that squats on what belongs to God (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). 3. Cultivate the land. – Use gifts and opportunities to bear fruit (John 15:8). 4. Live generously. – An heir is secure enough to give freely (Acts 20:35). 5. Hold lightly to temporary stuff. – Your lasting assets are in Christ, not in a portfolio (Hebrews 13:5). Guarding Our Inheritance • “Make every effort to confirm your calling and election… you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom” (2 Peter 1:10-11). • Vigilance keeps compromise from eroding joy and witness. Sharing the Inheritance • The land list in Joshua expanded the borders of praise; our mandate expands the family of heirs. • “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations…” (Matthew 28:19-20). • When we proclaim the gospel, we invite others into the same divine estate. Daily Reminders • Start the morning thanking God for at least one promise that is already yours. • Speak inheritance language: “Because I am an heir, I can forgive… I can risk… I am secure.” • End the day reviewing how you walked in heir-confidence, not orphan-insecurity. Let every “Lachish, Bozkath, Eglon” on Israel’s ancient map remind you: God hands real territory to His people. The lines have fallen for us in Christ—walk them with gratitude, faith, and expectation. |
