The one who overcomes
This phrase refers to the concept of spiritual victory and perseverance in the Christian faith. In the context of Revelation, overcoming is a recurring theme (Revelation 2-3) and is associated with remaining faithful to Christ despite trials and persecution. The term "overcomes" is derived from the Greek word "nikao," which means to conquer or prevail. This reflects the spiritual battle believers face against sin, the world, and Satan. The idea of overcoming is also linked to the promises given to the seven churches in Revelation, where each church is encouraged to overcome specific challenges.

will inherit all things
The promise of inheritance is a significant biblical theme, often associated with the blessings and promises of God to His people. In the Old Testament, inheritance was tied to the land promised to Abraham and his descendants (Genesis 12:7). In the New Testament, the concept expands to include the spiritual inheritance of eternal life and the kingdom of God (Romans 8:17, Galatians 3:29). The phrase "all things" suggests the fullness of God's promises, including eternal life, the new heaven and new earth, and the presence of God Himself. This inheritance is not earned but is a gift to those who remain faithful.

and I will be his God
This phrase echoes the covenant language found throughout the Bible, where God promises to be the God of His people (Exodus 6:7, Jeremiah 31:33). It signifies a personal and relational aspect of God's promise, emphasizing His commitment and faithfulness to those who overcome. This relationship is central to the biblical narrative, where God desires to dwell with His people and be their God. In Revelation, this promise is fulfilled in the new creation, where God dwells with humanity in a restored relationship.

and he will be My son
The concept of sonship in the Bible conveys a deep relationship with God, marked by love, inheritance, and identity. In the New Testament, believers are often referred to as children of God (John 1:12, Romans 8:14-17). This sonship is made possible through faith in Jesus Christ, who is the ultimate Son of God. The phrase "he will be My son" indicates a status of honor and privilege, reflecting the believer's adoption into God's family. It also points to the intimate relationship between God and His people, where believers are not only subjects of God's kingdom but also His beloved children.

Teaching Points
Perseverance in Faith
Believers are called to remain steadfast in their faith, trusting in God's promises despite trials.

Identity in Christ
Understanding our identity as God's children can transform how we live, knowing we are loved and valued by Him.

Eternal Perspective
Focusing on the eternal inheritance helps believers prioritize spiritual over temporal matters.

Victory through Christ
Overcoming is possible through the power and victory of Jesus, not by our strength alone.

Intimacy with God
The promise of God being our Father invites us into a deep, personal relationship with Him.(7) He that overcometh shall inherit all things . . .--Rather, He that conquereth shall inherit these things; and I will be to him God, and he shall be to me a son. The general promise of Revelation 21:3 is in part repeated, and this time more individually. Again we catch, as it were, the echo of the promises to the Seven Churches, the blessing is for him that conquereth. The idea of the war and the conquest is a favourite one with St. John. (John 16:33, and 1John 2:13-14; 1John 5:4-5; see also Note on Revelation 2:7.) The source and weapon of victory have been before stated: the blood of the Lamb, the word of their testimony (Revelation 12:11), and the victory of faith (1John 5:4). . . . Verse 7. - He that overcometh shall inherit all things. The correct reading makes the sense plain: He that overcometh shall inherit these things, i.e. the promises just enumerated. These words show the reason for the words of ver. 6; and may be called the text on which the Apocalypse is based (cf. Revelation 2.); for, though the words themselves do not often recur, yet the spirit of them is constantly appearing (cf. Revelation 12:11; see also John 16:33). And I will be his God, and he shall be my son (cf. Leviticus 26:12, "And I will walk among you, and will be your God, and ye shall be my people"). Some have thought that these words prove the Speaker to be God the Father; but it is impossible to separate the Persons of the Blessed Trinity in these chapters. This promise, first made to David concerning Solomon (2 Samuel 7:14), received its mystical fulfilment in Christ (Hebrews 1:5), and is now fulfilled in the members of Christ (Alford).
