Applying restitution today: how?
How can we apply the principle of restitution in our lives today?

Living Lesson from 1 Samuel 6:3

“If you send away the ark of the God of Israel, do not send it away empty; but by all means return to Him a guilt offering…”

Why Restitution Matters

• God connects forgiveness with a tangible righting of wrongs.

• Restitution is not payment for grace; it is evidence that grace has reached the heart.

• The Philistines sensed this; Israel’s Law stated it plainly (Exodus 22:1; Leviticus 6:2-5).

Old-Testament Framework

• Stolen livestock: “must pay back five head of cattle for the ox or four sheep for the sheep” (Exodus 22:1).

• Defrauding a neighbor: restore in full + add a fifth (Leviticus 6:5).

• Prophets decried worship without justice (Isaiah 1:17; Amos 5:24).

New-Testament Echoes

• Zacchaeus: “Look, Lord! If I have cheated anyone of anything, I will repay four times the amount.” Jesus called this “salvation” evidence (Luke 19:8-9).

• Paul to Philemon: “If he has wronged you or owes you anything, charge it to me” (Philemon 18).

• Believers are urged to “owe no one anything, except to love each other” (Romans 13:8).

Practical Restitution Today

1. Review past wrongs

 • Ask the Spirit to surface overlooked debts—financial, relational, reputational.

2. Make contact

 • A sincere apology often precedes effective repayment.

 • Use clear, humble language: “I wronged you by … I want to make it right.”

3. Return or replace

 • Money, property, unpaid wages (James 5:4).

 • Time stolen from employers—offer extra hours or services.

4. Add a “fifth” where possible

 • A gift beyond the exact amount underscores genuine repentance.

5. Repair reputation

 • Publicly correct gossip or slander you spread (Proverbs 22:1).

6. Digital integrity

 • Delete pirated files; purchase legitimate copies.

 • Remove harmful posts; seek peace in online conflicts (Romans 12:18).

7. Church and ministry

 • If misuse of funds occurred, disclose fully, repay, and submit to oversight (2 Corinthians 8:20-21).

8. When restitution is impossible

 • Give equivalent value to the needy (Luke 19:8 implies creative generosity).

 • Trust God to honor the intent when literal repayment cannot happen.

Promises Linked to Restitution

• Restored fellowship with God (Leviticus 6:7).

• A clear conscience (Acts 24:16).

• A witness that the gospel transforms lives (Matthew 5:16).

Taking the Next Step

Grace removes guilt; restitution removes lingering shadows. By making wrongs right—promptly, cheerfully, and sacrificially—we honor the God who made full restitution for us at the cross.
