Avoid spiritual "drunkenness" daily?
How can we avoid spiritual "drunkenness" in our daily walk with Christ?

Setting the Context

“ For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:7

Paul contrasts night-time behavior with the daylight life of believers. Spiritual drunkenness is any dulling of our senses that keeps us from living in the clear light of Christ.

What Spiritual Drunkenness Looks Like

• Drowsy indifference toward sin (Romans 13:11–14)

• Numbing the heart with worldly distractions (Luke 21:34)

• Losing vigilance against the enemy’s schemes (1 Peter 5:8)

• Compromising convictions to fit cultural pressure (James 4:4)

Staying Sober-Minded: Practical Steps

• Stay in the daylight of God’s Word every day (Psalm 119:105).

– Read, meditate, and immediately apply even one verse.

• Keep short accounts with God. Confess quickly (1 John 1:9).

• Choose edifying input—music, conversations, entertainment (Philippians 4:8).

• Schedule rhythms of rest so fatigue doesn’t become temptation’s ally (Mark 6:31).

Guardrails for the Mind

• Put on the helmet of salvation (Ephesians 6:17)—remind yourself whose you are.

• Fill the mind with thanksgiving; grumbling clouds judgment (Colossians 3:15-17).

• Memorize “alert” verses such as 1 Thessalonians 5:6, 1 Peter 1:13, and 1 Corinthians 16:13.

• Invite trusted believers to speak up if they see you drifting (Hebrews 3:13).

Fuel for Daily Alertness

• The Spirit’s fullness replaces all counterfeit highs (Ephesians 5:18).

• Hope in Christ’s return keeps the heart awake (Titus 2:11-13).

• Regular fellowship sharpens discernment (Hebrews 10:24-25).

• Serving others redirects focus from self-indulgence to Christlike love (Galatians 5:13).

Running the Race Together

• Encourage one another with the promise, “The night is nearly over; the day has drawn near” (Romans 13:12).

• Celebrate victories, however small, to reinforce sober living.

• Press on, “soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age” (Titus 2:12), until we stand in the full light of His presence.
