Balaam's approach: prayer inspiration?
How can Balaam's approach in Numbers 22:10 inspire our prayer life today?

Setting the Scene

Balak fears Israel’s advance and hires Balaam to curse God’s people (Numbers 22:1-9). Before responding to Balak, Balaam brings the matter to the LORD.

Key Verse

Numbers 22:10: “And Balaam said to God, ‘Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab, has sent me this message.’”

What Balaam Did Right

• Took the request straight to God instead of relying on his own instincts.

• Spoke honestly, repeating Balak’s words exactly, holding nothing back.

• Waited for God’s answer before making commitments (v. 8: “I will bring you back the answer the LORD gives me”).

• Recognized God’s sovereignty; he would only speak what God allowed (v. 18).

Lessons for Our Prayer Life

• Bring every concern directly to the LORD, however mundane or complex.

• Speak transparently—lay out details, motives, and fears without editing for God’s ears (Psalm 62:8).

• Wait for divine direction before acting, practicing patient listening (Psalm 27:14).

• Resolve beforehand to obey whatever God says, even if it counters human pressure (Acts 5:29).

• Acknowledge God’s absolute authority over outcomes, trusting His wisdom over personal advantage (Proverbs 3:5-6).
