Be open to God's revelations like Samuel.
How can you ensure you are receptive to God's revelations like Samuel?

Scripture Focus

“And the LORD continued to appear at Shiloh, because there He revealed Himself to Samuel by His word.” – 1 Samuel 3:21

Observations from Samuel’s Experience

• Located where God was honored: Samuel stayed in the tabernacle at Shiloh (3:3).

• Serving before he was hearing: “The boy Samuel ministered to the LORD before Eli” (3:1).

• Responded promptly: “Speak, for Your servant is listening” (3:10).

• God’s ongoing self-revelation flowed “by His word” (3:21). These same patterns open our ears today.

Principles for a Receptive Heart

• Prioritize God’s presence

Psalm 27:4; Proverbs 8:34. Make time and space where He is honored.

• Adopt a servant attitude

1 Samuel 3:10. Keep the posture “Your servant is listening,” not “Your consultant is judging.”

• Immerse in Scripture

Joshua 1:8; Hebrews 4:12. Revelation comes most often “by His word.” Regular, careful reading expects God to speak literally and accurately.

• Practice stillness and attentiveness

Psalm 46:10. Silence phones, minds, and agendas to recognize His voice.

• Listen with intent to obey

James 1:22. God speaks more to hearts that act on what they already know.

• Stay spiritually sensitive in community

– Eli helped Samuel discern the voice (3:8-9); fellowship and mature counsel keep us tuned.

Putting It into Practice

• Set a daily appointment with the Lord in an uncluttered spot; begin with a simple “Speak, Lord.”

• Read a passage aloud, then pause to ponder phrases the Spirit highlights (Psalm 119:18).

• Journal impressions and any clear directives; compare them with Scripture for confirmation.

• Memorize key verses so His word can reach you throughout the day (Deuteronomy 6:6-7).

• Obey promptly—even in small matters—to keep your heart unclogged.

• Gather with believers who encourage discernment and accountability (Hebrews 10:24-25).

Encouraging Promises for Listeners

• “My sheep listen to My voice; I know them, and they follow Me.” – John 10:27

• “Whoever has My commandments and keeps them … I will love him and reveal Myself to him.” – John 14:21

Stay near, stay humble, stay in the Word, and—like Samuel—you will be ready when God speaks.
