Be proactive in God's work like Miriam?
How can we be proactive in God's work, like Miriam in Exodus 2:7?

Setting the Scene

Exodus 2:7 records a pivotal moment in Israel’s history:

“Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, ‘Shall I go and call a nursing woman from the Hebrews to nurse the child for you?’”

Though still a child, Miriam steps forward with courageous initiative. Her single sentence preserves Moses’ life and positions him to become Israel’s deliverer. The narrative invites us to consider how we, too, can step up when God opens a door.

What Made Miriam Proactive?

• She was alert—watching the basket instead of turning away in fear (v. 4).

• She anticipated need—recognizing Pharaoh’s daughter would require a nurse.

• She offered help—speaking promptly and respectfully.

• She trusted God—believing He would honor obedience even in Egypt’s hostile climate.

Principles for Our Own Initiative

1. Stay spiritually awake

• “Be very careful, then, how you walk—not as unwise but as wise, redeeming the time…” (Ephesians 5:15-16).

• Keep eyes open to people, problems, and possibilities God places nearby.

2. Anticipate where the gospel can meet needs

• Like Miriam, think one step ahead: what solution would glorify God and bless others?

Philippians 2:4: “Let each of you look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.”

3. Speak up with humble confidence

Proverbs 31:8 encourages, “Open your mouth for those with no voice.”

• Our words can bridge the gap between crisis and God’s provision.

4. Align actions with faith in God’s sovereignty

• Miriam did not know the full outcome, yet she moved in trust.

Psalm 37:5: “Commit your way to the LORD; trust in Him, and He will do it.”

Everyday Ways to Practice Proactive Faith

• Offer practical help before being asked—meals, childcare, transportation.

• Volunteer for ministries that match your God-given abilities.

• Keep a running prayer list and follow up with tangible encouragement.

• Share Scripture verses or testimonies at timely moments.

• Cultivate skills (teaching, music, craftsmanship) so you’re ready when opportunity knocks.

Encouragement from Other Examples

• Isaiah: “Here am I. Send me!” (Isaiah 6:8).

• Jonathan’s bold advance against the Philistines (1 Samuel 14:6).

• Lydia’s immediate hospitality to Paul and Silas (Acts 16:14-15).

All seized the moment just as Miriam did—acting promptly, trusting God for outcomes.

A Challenge to Take the First Step

James 1:22 reminds us, “Be doers of the word, and not hearers only.” Ask the Lord to reveal one situation today where you can initiate help, speak truth, or offer resources. Then step forward with the same courageous faith Miriam displayed beside the Nile.
