Biblical figures with partial obedience?
What other biblical figures struggled with partial obedience to God?

Amaziah’s Example: A Right Start, a Divided Heart

2 Chronicles 25:2 — “He did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, but not wholeheartedly.”

• Amaziah’s reign opens with promise, yet the Holy Spirit singles out his lack of “wholehearted” devotion.

• That single line sets a pattern Scripture highlights again and again: outward conformity without inward surrender.

Other Biblical Figures Who Modeled Partial Obedience

• King Saul — 1 Samuel 13:8-14; 15:9-23

– Offered sacrifice instead of waiting for Samuel.

– Spared King Agag and the best livestock.

1 Samuel 15:22: “To obey is better than sacrifice.”

• Moses — Numbers 20:7-12

– Instructed to speak to the rock; struck it twice instead.

– Result: barred from entering Canaan.

• Gideon — Judges 6:25-27; 8:24-27

– Tore down Baal’s altar, but did it at night out of fear.

– Later made an ephod that became a snare to Israel.

• Solomon — 1 Kings 3:3; 11:1-10

– “Solomon loved the LORD, walking in the statutes of his father David, but he also sacrificed and burned incense on the high places.”

– Foreign wives turned his heart after other gods.

• Jehu — 2 Kings 10:28-31

– Eradicated Baal worship yet clung to Jeroboam’s golden calves.

– Verse 31: “Jehu did not turn aside from the sins of Jeroboam… he did not walk in the law of the LORD with all his heart.”

• Jonah — Jonah 1–4

– Ran from Nineveh, then preached reluctantly.

– Showed outward compliance, inward resistance.

• Ananias and Sapphira — Acts 5:1-10

– Gave an offering yet withheld part while claiming full devotion.

– Their deception cost them their lives.

The Cost of Half-Hearted Obedience

• Lost privilege (Moses); lost kingdom (Saul); spiritual decline (Solomon, Jehu).

• God’s reputation among outsiders suffers (Jonah 4:1-3).

• Personal fellowship with the Lord is compromised (Psalm 66:18).

Why Wholehearted Obedience Matters

Deuteronomy 6:5 — “You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.”

James 1:22 — “Be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.”

John 14:23 — “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word.”

Wholehearted obedience is the authentic overflow of a heart that loves God without rival.

Living Undivided Today

• Invite Scripture to expose divided motives (Hebrews 4:12).

• Surrender selective areas one by one—finances, relationships, ambitions.

• Cultivate a daily habit of immediate, complete response to God’s promptings.

• Remember that small compromises tend to grow; small acts of obedience do too (Luke 16:10).

How can we ensure our actions align with God's will wholeheartedly?
