Biblical leaders urging national repentance?
What other biblical instances show leaders calling for national repentance and worship?

Hezekiah’s Passover Assembly (2 Chronicles 30:2)

• King Hezekiah “consulted with the princes and the whole assembly in Jerusalem to observe the Passover in the second month.” That royal initiative sets the pattern: a leader gathers the nation, urges repentance, and restores true worship.

Earlier Calls in Israel’s History

• Moses after the golden calf – Exodus 32:26: “So Moses stood at the entrance to the camp and said, ‘Whoever is for the LORD, come to me.’ And all the Levites rallied to him.”

• Moses before Sinai – Exodus 19:10: the people must “consecrate themselves” before meeting God.

• Joshua at Shechem – Joshua 24:14-15: “Now therefore, fear the LORD and serve Him in sincerity and truth… As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”

• Samuel at Mizpah – 1 Samuel 7:3-6; v.3: “If you are returning to the LORD with all your hearts, then rid yourselves of the foreign gods… and He will deliver you.”

• Solomon’s temple dedication – 2 Chronicles 6:36-39 and 7:14: “If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves… I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”

Royal Reformations in Judah

• Jehoshaphat – 2 Chronicles 20:3-4: “Jehoshaphat was alarmed and set his face to seek the LORD. And he proclaimed a fast throughout Judah.”

• Josiah – 2 Kings 23:2-3: “The king… read in their hearing all the words of the Book of the Covenant… and all the people entered into the covenant.”

• (Hezekiah’s own father-in-law, the parallel to our verse, is a reminder that one godly ruler can reverse years of neglect.)

Prophetic Confrontations That Shaped a Nation

• Elijah on Carmel – 1 Kings 18:21: “How long will you waver between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow Him.” v.39: “The LORD, He is God!”

• Joel – Joel 2:12-17 summons priests and people to fast and cry to the LORD.

• Jonah in Nineveh – Jonah 3:5-8: “The people of Nineveh believed God… They proclaimed a fast… Let everyone call out earnestly to God.” Even a pagan capital models corporate repentance.

Post-Exile Community Renewals

• Ezra – Ezra 10:1: “While Ezra was praying and confessing… a very large assembly of Israelites… gathered around him, and the people wept bitterly.”

• Nehemiah – Nehemiah 9:2-3: the returned exiles “confessed and worshiped the LORD their God” for half the day after reading the Law.

Voices Preparing the New Covenant

• John the Baptist – Luke 3:3, 8: he preached “a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins… Produce fruit, then, in keeping with repentance.”

• Jesus Himself opened His ministry with the kingdom call, Mark 1:15.

Seeing the Thread

From Moses to John, God consistently works through leaders who:

1. Confront sin openly.

2. Call the whole community—leaders and common people alike—to turn back.

3. Center the response on covenant obedience, public worship, and often fasting.

4. Receive immediate divine favor or deliverance when the nation responds in faith.

These episodes echo Hezekiah’s initiative in 2 Chronicles 30:2 and assure us that when a people humbles itself under godly leadership, the LORD truly hears and heals.

How does 2 Chronicles 30:2 demonstrate leadership in spiritual renewal?
