How can we ensure God's commandments are central in our daily decision-making? The scene at Sinai: God’s Word etched in stone “Then Moses turned and went down the mountain with the two tablets of the Testimony in his hands. They were inscribed on both sides—front and back.” (Exodus 32:15) Those tablets were real stone, inscribed by God Himself (v. 16). Front and back engraving left no blank space—every surface bore His commandments. The visual still speaks: God intends His Word to fill every side of life, leaving no gap for competing voices. Why the double–sided tablets still matter • Permanence – Stone outlasts parchment. God’s standards are fixed, not shifting with culture (Psalm 119:89). • Visibility – Writing on both sides meant anyone handling the tablets would see the law from any angle. Our decisions should likewise reveal His Word from every angle. • Exclusivity – No room was left for extra edits. We guard against adding human opinion to what God has already said (Deuteronomy 4:2). Principles for keeping the commandments at the center of decisions 1. Start with Scripture, not feelings • “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (Psalm 119:105) • Feelings follow; truth leads. 2. Carry the Word internally • “I have hidden Your word in my heart that I might not sin against You.” (Psalm 119:11) • Memorize key passages related to areas where you struggle. 3. Let every choice filter through love for God • Jesus summed up the law: “Love the Lord your God… love your neighbor” (Matthew 22:37-40). • When love is first, obedience becomes desire, not duty (John 14:15). 4. Refuse partial obedience • The tablets were whole; breaking even one command broke the set (James 2:10). • Small compromises erode the habit of godly decision-making. 5. Seek alignment, not mere advice • “Trust in the LORD with all your heart… He will make your paths straight.” (Proverbs 3:5-6) • Scripture is not a suggestion box—it is the standard. Daily practices that keep His Word within reach • Morning alignment: read a portion of Scripture before checking phone or headlines (Joshua 1:8). • Written reminders: place verses on dashboard, mirror, phone lock screen (Deuteronomy 6:6-9). • Mealtime conversations: discuss one biblical principle and how it shaped a recent choice. • Decision journal: when facing a choice, write the biblical command/principle that applies, the action taken, and the outcome. • Weekly reset: spend Sabbath/Sunday afternoon reviewing the week’s decisions against Scripture, confessing where you drifted (Psalm 139:23-24). • Accountability partner: share major decisions with a mature believer who will ask, “Where is that in the Word?” (Proverbs 27:17). • Worship soundtrack: fill commutes or chores with Scripture-saturated music to renew the mind (Colossians 3:16). Scripture connections that reinforce obedience • 2 Timothy 3:16-17 – All Scripture equips for “every good work.” • James 1:22-25 – Hearing without doing is self-deception; obedience brings blessing. • Psalm 1:1-3 – Delighting in the law produces stability and fruitfulness. • 1 John 5:3 – “His commandments are not burdensome.” • Colossians 3:17 – “Whatever you do… do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus.” Living the inscription today God once engraved His law on stone. In Christ and by His Spirit, He now writes it on our hearts (Hebrews 8:10). When His Word fills every side of life—front and back—choices become clearer, obedience becomes joy, and every decision becomes another stroke of living testimony to the God who still speaks. |
