Challenges in spreading God's word?
What obstacles might we face when spreading God's word like in Acts 13:49?

Remembering the Scene in Acts 13:49

“And the word of the Lord spread through that whole region.” (Acts 13:49)

Luke paints a thrilling picture: the gospel is racing from mouth to mouth, house to house, city to city. Yet the very next verse shows push-back. That pattern repeats whenever God’s people carry His truth into the world.

Common Obstacles We Can Expect

• Organized opposition

– “But the Jews incited the devout women of prominence and the leading men of the city. They stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas and drove them out of their district.” (Acts 13:50)

– Expect coalitions—religious, political, cultural—to form when the gospel confronts entrenched systems (see Acts 4:1–3).

• Jealousy and rivalry

– In Pisidian Antioch, crowds eager to hear Paul provoked envy among certain Jews (Acts 13:45).

– Popular response to the gospel can threaten those who fear losing influence (cf. Acts 17:5).

• Slander and misinformation

– Leaders “stirred up” the city with half-truths and outright lies (Acts 14:2).

– Jesus forewarned, “Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me.” (Matthew 5:11)

• Social pressure and intimidation

– Influential women and civic rulers were deployed to ostracize the missionaries (Acts 13:50).

– Modern equivalents include professional consequences, online shaming, or legal challenges (John 12:42-43).

• Physical persecution

– Paul and Barnabas were expelled; later, Paul was stoned (Acts 14:19).

– “Indeed, all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.” (2 Timothy 3:12)

• Spiritual warfare

– Behind visible hostility stands an unseen enemy (Ephesians 6:12).

– Paul confronted Elymas the sorcerer earlier in the same chapter (Acts 13:8-11).

• Weariness and discouragement

– Constant resistance can sap courage; Paul needed repeated fresh filling of the Spirit (Acts 13:9,52).

– “Let us not grow weary in well-doing, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.” (Galatians 6:9)

Why Obstacles Cannot Stop the Word

• The gospel’s innate power

– “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes.” (Romans 1:16)

• The risen Christ’s authority

– Jesus promised, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me.” (Matthew 28:18)

• The Spirit’s enabling presence

– “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be My witnesses.” (Acts 1:8)

• The promise of ultimate triumph

– “The word of God continued to spread and multiply.” (Acts 12:24)

– “The earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD as the waters cover the sea.” (Habakkuk 2:14)

Practical Encouragement for Today

• Anticipate resistance as normal, not surprising (1 Peter 4:12).

• Anchor identity in Christ, not in public approval (John 15:18-20).

• Speak truth plainly, letting Scripture itself do the heavy lifting (Hebrews 4:12).

• Lean on the fellowship of believers; Paul never ministered alone (Acts 13:2).

• Keep the long view—the spread of the Word will always outlast any temporary setback (Acts 28:31).

The gospel advanced in Acts 13 because the apostles expected obstacles yet pressed on. We walk the same road today, confident that the Word we carry is living, unstoppable, and eternally victorious.
