David's conquest: proof of God's promise?
How does David's conquest of Jerusalem demonstrate God's faithfulness to His promises?

Setting the Scene

“Now the king and his men marched to Jerusalem against the Jebusites, who inhabited the land. The Jebusites said to David, ‘You will never get in here; even the blind and the lame can ward you off,’ thinking, ‘David cannot get in here.’ ” (2 Samuel 5:6)

Tracing the Promise

Genesis 12:7 — God tells Abram, “To your offspring I will give this land.”

Genesis 15:18-21 — The promise is detailed; the Jebusites are specifically listed among the peoples to be driven out.

Deuteronomy 7:1-2 — Moses repeats that the LORD will deliver “seven nations … including the Jebusites” into Israel’s hands.

Joshua 15:63; Judges 1:21 — Centuries pass, and Jerusalem remains in Jebusite control. The promise seems stalled, yet never revoked.

1 Samuel 16:13; 2 Samuel 3:18 — God anoints David, pledging to “save My people Israel … by the hand of My servant David.”

Jerusalem—A Stubborn Stronghold

• Natural defenses: high walls, steep slopes, an underground water shaft.

• Psychological barrier: generations of Israelites had failed to remove the Jebusites.

• Spiritual significance: Mount Moriah (Genesis 22) and Melchizedek’s Salem (Genesis 14) are tied to this same ridge—God’s eye had long been on this city.

The Moment of Fulfillment (2 Samuel 5:6-9)

• David hears the taunt, but he also hears God’s older words echoing behind it.

• Verse 7: “Nevertheless, David captured the fortress of Zion (that is, the City of David).”

• Verse 8 hints that the very water shaft the Jebusites trusted becomes the entry point God uses—He turns enemy confidence into weakness.

• Verse 9: David settles in the fortress and calls it “the City of David,” anchoring the capital—and Israel’s worship life—where God had always intended.

Layers of God’s Faithfulness Revealed

• Promise to Abraham kept — The land, including Jebusite territory, is now in Israel’s hands (Genesis 15:18-21).

• Promise through Moses and Joshua validated — What Israel could not accomplish in earlier generations, God completes at the right time (Deuteronomy 7:1-2).

• Promise to David launched — A secure capital allows the next covenant chapter: “I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever” (2 Samuel 7:13).

• Promise of Zion’s future secured — Psalm 78:68 says God “chose Mount Zion, which He loved.” Isaiah 2:3 and Luke 1:32-33 look ahead to Messiah’s reign from this very hill.

• Promise of God’s unchanging character displayed — “Not one word of all the good promises that the LORD had made … had failed” (Joshua 21:45). Jerusalem’s capture stands as a living monument to that truth.

Encouragement for Today

• Delays do not equal denials; centuries of apparent stalemate ended in a single day when God’s timing matured.

• Obstacles that loom large (the Jebusite fortress) are powerless before promises that loom larger.

• The same God who kept His word to Abraham, Moses, Joshua, and David continues to keep His word to all who trust Him (2 Corinthians 1:20).

Why did David choose Jerusalem as his capital according to 2 Samuel 5:6?
