What actions can we take to ensure our leaders align with biblical principles? Setting the Scene “From Megiddo his servants carried his body in a chariot, brought him to Jerusalem, and buried him in his own tomb. And the people of the land took Jehoahaz son of Josiah, anointed him, and made him king in place of his father.” – 2 Kings 23:30 Josiah’s godly reign ends; the nation immediately chooses a successor. Within three months (v.32), that new king “did evil in the sight of the LORD.” The contrast invites us to ask how God’s people can act so their leaders stay aligned with His principles. Recognize Our Responsibility • “The people of the land took…anointed…made him king.” They were not spectators. • Likewise, we are called to active stewardship: – “Select capable men who fear God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain.” Exodus 18:21 – “When you enter the land…you shall surely set a king over you whom the LORD your God chooses.” Deuteronomy 17:14-15 Cultivate Discernment Through the Word • Scripture defines righteous leadership (Deuteronomy 17:18-20; Proverbs 16:12). • Measure every candidate or current leader against God’s revealed standards, not charisma or tradition. • “Solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained their senses to distinguish good from evil.” Hebrews 5:14 Pray and Fast for Guidance • “I urge that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people—for kings and all in authority.” 1 Timothy 2:1-2 • National direction pivots on intercession: see Nehemiah 1 and Daniel 9. • Fast when critical choices loom (Acts 13:2-3). Engage the Public Square • Use lawful avenues—voting, advocacy, public comment—to favor leaders who honor life, marriage, justice, and religious liberty (Proverbs 31:8-9). • Speak truth graciously: “Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt.” Colossians 4:6 • Respect authority while opposing evil policies (Acts 5:29). Hold Leaders Accountable to Scripture • Nathan confronted David (2 Samuel 12). John the Baptist rebuked Herod (Mark 6:18). • Write, call, visit, and remind officials of biblical ethics. • Support laws that align with God’s moral order; oppose those that don’t (Isaiah 10:1-2). Model Obedience Ourselves • Hypocrisy blunts our influence (Romans 2:21-24). • Cultivate personal holiness so our voice carries moral weight (1 Peter 2:12). • Serve locally—school boards, city councils—to shine light from within (Matthew 5:14-16). Invest in the Next Generation • Josiah’s reforms collapsed because hearts hadn’t changed. • “These words…you shall teach them diligently to your children.” Deuteronomy 6:6-7 • Train future leaders to love and obey God, ensuring a legacy of righteousness. Takeaway Snapshot 1. Immerse ourselves in Scripture to develop discernment. 2. Pray and fast for God to raise up righteous leaders. 3. Participate in civic processes with biblical convictions. 4. Confront and counsel leaders using God’s Word. 5. Live faithfully and disciple the next generation. By embracing these actions, we steward our God-given influence and help ensure those who govern us do so in harmony with His unchanging truth. |
