Exodus 16:32 links to John 6:35's "bread."
Connect Exodus 16:32 with Jesus as the "bread of life" in John 6:35.

Setting the Scene

• Israel has just left Egypt, entering a barren wilderness (Exodus 16:1).

• God answers their hunger with a miraculous provision—manna, “bread from heaven” (Exodus 16:4).

• Centuries later, Jesus stands before another hungry crowd and says, “I am the bread of life” (John 6:35).

• Scripture invites us to connect these two moments: one points to the other.

Bread from Heaven in the Wilderness

Exodus 16:32: “Moses said, ‘This is what the LORD has commanded: “Fill an omer with manna to be kept for future generations, so they can see the bread I gave you to eat in the wilderness when I brought you out of Egypt.”’”

• Key observations:

– The manna is literal, daily, and miraculous.

– God commands a memorial portion—an unspoiled witness inside the tabernacle (Hebrews 9:4).

– Purpose: future generations must “see the bread” and remember God’s saving power.

Jesus Declares: I Am the Bread of Life

John 6:35: “Jesus answered, ‘I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to Me will never hunger, and whoever believes in Me will never thirst.’”

• Context: the crowd has just eaten the multiplied loaves (John 6:11–13). They want more physical bread; Jesus redirects them to Himself (John 6:26–27).

• His claim is exclusive and universal: only Christ satisfies the deepest hunger of every soul.

Parallels Between Manna and Christ

• Origin

– Manna: “bread from heaven” (Psalm 78:24).

– Jesus: “the true bread from heaven” (John 6:32–33).

• Provision

– Manna sustained physical life for one day at a time (Exodus 16:19–21).

– Jesus grants eternal life to all who believe (John 6:47–51).

• Preservation

– An omer of manna was placed before the LORD as a testimony (Exodus 16:33–34).

– Christ’s body is the enduring testimony; He is alive forever (Revelation 1:18).

• Participation

– Israel had to gather and eat the manna personally (Exodus 16:16).

– Each person must “come” and “believe” in Jesus (John 6:35, 40).

• Purpose

– Manna showed God’s faithfulness in the exodus.

– Jesus consummates that faithfulness, delivering from sin and death (1 Corinthians 15:3–4).

Responding in Faith

• Israel’s lesson: trust God daily (Deuteronomy 8:3).

• Our lesson: believe in the One He has sent (John 6:29).

• Rejecting the bread brings death in the wilderness (Numbers 14:29); rejecting Christ brings eternal separation (John 3:18).

Living on the True Bread Today

• Feed on His Word—same voice that rained manna now speaks through Scripture (2 Timothy 3:16).

• Rely on His sufficiency—He meets spiritual, emotional, and physical needs (Philippians 4:19).

• Gather in community—Israel collected manna together; believers share Christ in fellowship (Acts 2:42).

• Look forward—hidden manna awaits the overcomer (Revelation 2:17); the Bread of Life will satisfy us forever at the marriage supper of the Lamb (Revelation 19:9).

How can we remember God's past provisions in our daily lives today?
