Gain favor with God & man today?
How can we gain "favor and high regard" with God and man today?

Setting the Foundation

Proverbs 3:3–4 sets the pattern: “Let loving devotion and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. Then you will find favor and high regard in the sight of God and man.”

• “Loving devotion” (ḥesed) = steadfast covenant love.

• “Faithfulness” (’emet) = reliability, truth, integrity.

• God links these two qualities to the promise of favor—first with Him, then with people.

Living Out Loving Devotion

• Stay loyal to God’s covenant: daily Scripture intake (Psalm 1:2).

• Show loyal love to people: practical mercy, generosity, and patient forgiveness (Luke 6:35–36).

• Guard relationships: refuse bitterness or revenge (Romans 12:17–18).

• Serve consistently, not sporadically (Galatians 6:9).

Result: people experience God’s character through us, and trust grows.

Walking in Faithfulness and Truth

• Speak truthfully—no spin, no flattery (Ephesians 4:25).

• Keep commitments—follow through even when costly (Psalm 15:4).

• Handle resources honestly—financial integrity builds credibility (Proverbs 11:1).

• Protect confidentiality—faithfulness with another’s reputation (Proverbs 11:13).

Result: a reputation for reliability that mirrors God’s own faithfulness (Numbers 23:19).

Cultivating Humility and Trust

Proverbs 3:5–6 commands trust in the LORD “with all your heart.” Favor grows as pride shrinks.

• Humility invites grace (James 4:6) and opens doors with people (Proverbs 29:23).

• Dependence on God guides choices, sparing us from self-made pitfalls that damage credibility.

Clothing Ourselves with Christlike Virtues

Colossians 3:12–14 urges believers to “clothe yourselves with hearts of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience… Over all these virtues put on love.”

Practical steps:

• Compassion—listen before speaking.

• Kindness—small, intentional acts of help.

• Gentleness—tone matters as much as truth.

• Patience—give people time to grow.

These qualities soften hearts toward us and spotlight the gospel (1 Peter 2:12).

Learning from Biblical Examples

• Joseph: steadfast integrity in adversity led to favor with Pharaoh (Genesis 39:21; 41:38–40).

• Samuel: “grew… in favor with the LORD and with men” (1 Samuel 2:26).

• Daniel: excellence and blamelessness earned respect even from pagan rulers (Daniel 6:3–4).

• Jesus: “grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man” (Luke 2:52)—the ultimate model.

Shining Light in Daily Life

• Do your work “as for the Lord” (Colossians 3:23). Quality earns respect.

• Keep short accounts—confess sin quickly to God (1 John 1:9) and apologize promptly to others.

• Engage culture with grace and truth (John 1:14), refusing compromise yet avoiding harshness.

• Let good deeds visibly glorify God (Matthew 5:16). People are drawn to authentic faith in action.

Enduring Results

• Favor with God: deeper fellowship, answered prayer, joyful assurance (Psalm 37:4; John 15:14–15).

• High regard with people: trustworthy influence that opens doors for witness (Proverbs 22:1).

• A life that echoes the message of the gospel—credible, compelling, and anchored in covenant love and faithfulness.
