God's name: character & promises?
What does God's name reveal about His character and promises in Exodus 6:2?

Setting the Scene

Israel groans under slavery, Moses is discouraged, and God answers:

“God also said to Moses, ‘I am the LORD.’ ” (Exodus 6:2)

The Name Declared: “I am the LORD”

• “LORD” (Hebrew YHWH) builds on God’s earlier self-disclosure: “I AM WHO I AM” (Exodus 3:14).

• More than a title, it is His covenant name—personal, relational, and forever (Exodus 3:15).

Character Traits Wrapped in the Name

• Self-existent – He depends on nothing outside Himself (cf. John 5:26).

• Eternal and unchanging – “For I, the LORD, do not change” (Malachi 3:6).

• Sovereign – ruler over Pharaoh, Israel, and the nations (Psalm 103:19).

• Holy – His name is set apart (Isaiah 42:8).

• Faithful – He keeps covenant “to a thousand generations” (Deuteronomy 7:9).

• Compassionate – He hears, sees, remembers, and acts for His people (Exodus 2:24-25).

Promises Packed into the Name (Exodus 6:4-8)

Because He is the LORD, He commits to:

1. Remember His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, Jacob (v. 4).

2. Bring Israel out from under Egypt’s burdens (v. 6).

3. Redeem with outstretched arm and mighty acts (v. 6).

4. Take them as His own people; be their God (v. 7).

5. Bring them into the promised land (v. 8).

Each promise flows from His character; if His name stands, the promises stand.

Living in Light of the Name

• Trust His unchanging nature when circumstances shift (Hebrews 13:8).

• Call on His name with confidence—“Those who know Your name trust You” (Psalm 9:10).

• Expect His covenant faithfulness in Christ, the ultimate deliverer (Luke 1:72-73).

• Worship with reverence; His name is holy and near (Psalm 99:3).
