God's truth vs. human teachings: discern?
How can we discern between God's truth and human teachings in our lives?

Setting the Scene in Colossians

Paul writes to believers being pressured by philosophies and rules added to the gospel. He exposes the emptiness of these add-ons and directs hearts back to Christ alone.

Key Verse—Colossians 2:22

“These will all perish with use, because they are based on human commands and teachings.”

Why Human Teachings Falter

• They originate in fallible minds rather than the perfect mind of God (Isaiah 55:8-9).

• They focus on outward practices that “perish with use,” lacking eternal substance.

• They create burdens Christ never placed on His people (Matthew 23:4).

Characteristics of God’s Truth

• It is breathed out by God and therefore fully authoritative—2 Timothy 3:16-17.

• It endures forever—1 Peter 1:24-25.

• It liberates rather than enslaves—John 8:31-32.

• It centers on Christ, “in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge”—Colossians 2:3.

Simple Tests for Discernment

1. Source Test: Does it come directly from God’s Word, plainly taught?

2. Christ-Exalting Test: Does it magnify Jesus or elevate human achievement?

3. Freedom Test: Does it lead to joyful obedience or oppressive rule-keeping?

4. Fruit Test: Does it produce the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23) or strife and pride?

5. Consistency Test: Is it consistent with the whole counsel of Scripture, not a single verse pulled out of context?

Practical Steps to Stay Aligned with Truth

• Saturate your mind daily with Scripture; let it be the first voice you hear.

• Memorize key passages that guard against error (e.g., Colossians 1:15-20 on Christ’s supremacy).

• Compare every sermon, book, or social-media post with the written Word.

• Invite mature believers to speak into your life; iron sharpens iron (Proverbs 27:17).

• Keep short accounts with God through confession, so sin doesn’t cloud judgment.

• Anchor worship and decisions in what God has said, not in personal preferences or trends.

Walking Forward in Confidence

The more familiar we are with the genuine—the living, enduring Word—the quicker we spot the counterfeit. Cling to Scripture’s certainty, hold fast to Christ, and let the Spirit constantly align your heart with God’s unchanging truth.
