Honor God with our best today?
How can we honor God with "the finest olive oil" in our lives today?

The verse at a glance

“ ‘All the finest olive oil and all the finest new wine and grain—the firstfruits that they give to the LORD—I have given to you.’ ” (Numbers 18:12)

Why olive oil mattered then

• Essential staple—food, fuel for lamps, medicine, perfume

• Symbol of consecration—used to anoint priests and kings (Exodus 30:25)

• Picture of the Spirit—oil that brings light and healing (Zechariah 4:1-6; James 5:14)

The best portion was to be offered first, declaring that everything ultimately belonged to God.

Timeless principle: God deserves the first and best

Proverbs 3:9-10: “Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your harvest; then your barns will be filled with plenty…”

Romans 12:1: “Present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual service of worship.”

The “finest olive oil” becomes a pattern for wholehearted, priority-setting devotion.

Modern expressions of our finest olive oil

1. Resources

• Regular, cheerful giving (2 Corinthians 9:7)

• Budgeted generosity toward missions, mercy, and local church needs

2. Time

• First moments of the day in Scripture and prayer, not the leftovers

• Weekly rest and worship that recalibrate the heart (Hebrews 10:24-25)

3. Talents & skills

• Serving in children’s ministry, music, outreach, hospitality, administration—whatever gifts the Spirit has entrusted

• Pursuing excellence at work “as unto the Lord” (Colossians 3:23-24)

4. Relationships

• Investing intentional, undistracted presence with family and fellow believers

• Opening the home for fellowship and discipleship (1 Peter 4:9-10)

5. Personal purity

• Guarding eyes, ears, and thoughts so the “oil” remains pure (Philippians 4:8)

• Quick confession and repentance when sin surfaces (1 John 1:9)

6. Compassion

• Applying “oil and wine” to the wounded neighbor as the Good Samaritan did (Luke 10:34)

• Partnering with ministries that feed, heal, and restore in Jesus’ name

Daily rhythms that keep the oil flowing

• Begin each day offering yourself—“Lord, everything is Yours; use me as You will.”

• Set giving on auto-pilot: first draft out of every paycheck supports kingdom work.

• Schedule a Sabbath: protect at least one twenty-four-hour block for worship, rest, and delight.

• Keep a gratitude journal: noting daily “firstfruits” God entrusts sharpens awareness of His provision.

• Invite accountability: trusted believers can help ensure the best, not the remnants, reach the Lord.

Encouragement to keep pouring

As we honor God with the “finest olive oil”—our choicest resources, time, and affection—He multiplies the blessing, filling “barns” and “vats” in ways no hoarded reserve ever could. The Spirit’s anointing flows most freely through hands that hold nothing back.
