How can believers resist authority?
How can believers today stand firm when facing opposition from authorities?

Setting the Scene – Acts 4:6

“Annas the high priest was there, along with Caiaphas, John, Alexander, and others of the high priest’s family.”

Peter and John are hauled before the highest religious court in Israel. Every human power center—heritage, office, prestige—stands against them. Yet the apostles will not retreat or soften their witness. Their example charts a course for every generation of believers who face pressure from governing powers.

Anchoring Truths for a Resolute Heart

• God’s Word is more authoritative than any human decree (Acts 5:29).

• Jesus predicted opposition and promised His presence (John 15:20; Matthew 28:20).

• The Holy Spirit equips ordinary people with extraordinary boldness (Acts 4:8, 13).

• Respectful submission to government stays intact until obedience to God is threatened (Romans 13:1–4; Daniel 3:16–18).

• Eternal reward outweighs earthly loss (2 Corinthians 4:17–18; Revelation 2:10).

Practices That Help Us Stand Firm Today

• Cultivate daily Scripture intake

– “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (Psalm 119:105)

• Pray for Spirit-filled courage

– The early church prayed, “Grant that Your bond-servants may speak Your word with complete boldness.” (Acts 4:29)

• Stay rooted in Christian community

– Isolation weakens; fellowship emboldens (Hebrews 10:24–25).

• Respond with respectful speech, not hostility

– “Always be prepared to give a defense…yet with gentleness and respect.” (1 Peter 3:15)

• Keep doing good works

– Good deeds silence false accusations (1 Peter 2:15).

• Remember persecuted believers worldwide

– “Remember those in chains as if you were bound with them.” (Hebrews 13:3).

Promises to Strengthen Resolve

• “Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul.” (Matthew 10:28)

• “The righteous are as bold as a lion.” (Proverbs 28:1)

• “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5)

• “Stand firm, and you will win life.” (Luke 21:19)

• “Be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power.” (Ephesians 6:10)

Walking Forward

The same Lord who steadied Peter and John before Annas and Caiaphas stands with every believer today. Draw courage from His Word, lean on His Spirit, stay connected to His people, and keep proclaiming His gospel—no matter who sits on the earthly bench.
