How can we aid our allies today?
In what ways can we support those who "contend at my side" today?

Standing Shoulder-to-Shoulder

“ Yes, and I ask you, true yokefellow, to assist these women who have contended at my side in the cause of the gospel, along with Clement and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the book of life.” (Philippians 4:3)

Paul assumes that gospel partnership is not a solo endeavor. Those “contending” need practical, tangible help from fellow believers who love Christ and cherish His word.

Prayerful Intercession

• Lift names before the Father daily, asking that they “may be filled with all power, according to His glorious might” (Colossians 1:11).

• Pray specifically for open doors, bold speech, and protection (Ephesians 6:18-20).

• Include their families; when loved ones are strengthened, servants remain steady.

Words That Strengthen

• “Therefore encourage and build one another up, just as you are already doing.” (1 Thessalonians 5:11)

• Send notes, texts, or calls that highlight evidences of God’s grace you see in them.

• Publicly affirm their labor—Paul often named coworkers so the church could rejoice (Romans 16; 1 Corinthians 16:17-18).

Material and Financial Partnership

• The Philippians supplied Paul’s needs “again and again.” (Philippians 4:15-16)

• Give generously and regularly; reliable support frees workers to focus on the mission.

• Share resources—vehicles, tools, technology—so they lack nothing essential.

Opening Our Homes and Lives

• “Share with the saints who are in need. Practice hospitality.” (Romans 12:13)

• Offer lodging during travel, meals after long days, safe places for rest.

• Make your home a hub for fellowship where weary servants are refreshed.

Shoulder-to-Shoulder Service

• Join them on the field when possible—short-term trips, local outreaches, discipleship classes.

• “Each of you should use whatever gift he has received to serve one another.” (1 Peter 4:10)

• Diverse gifts—administration, mercy, teaching, helps—multiply gospel impact.

Protective Accountability

• “Carry one another’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” (Galatians 6:2)

• Ask honest, caring questions about spiritual health, family, temptations.

• Meet regularly for Scripture and mutual exhortation (Hebrews 10:24-25).

Celebrating and Affirming

• Rejoice in victories and answered prayer; celebration fuels perseverance.

• Follow Paul’s pattern: “Recognize such men.” (1 Corinthians 16:18)

• Highlight testimonies in gatherings so the whole body honors God’s work through them.

Continual Perspective

• Those who contend are fellow heirs, “whose names are in the book of life” (Philippians 4:3).

• Supporting them means sharing in eternal reward (3 John 8).

• As we stand with them now, we echo God’s own faithfulness: “But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me.” (2 Timothy 4:17)

By praying, encouraging, giving, opening our lives, serving alongside, providing accountability, and celebrating God’s victories, we tangibly “assist” modern gospel contenders, fulfilling the Spirit’s call issued through Paul to the church in Philippi.
