How can we be a light in our community?
In what ways can we be "light" in our communities, like the lampstand?

Light Rooted in Christ

“Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’ ” (John 8:12)

• Our ability to shine begins with union with Jesus, the true Light.

• A lampstand holds, elevates, and displays the flame; believers hold, elevate, and display Christ.

• Like the golden lampstand of the tabernacle (Exodus 25:31-40), we are fashioned for holiness and continual illumination.

Daily Walk That Keeps the Flame Bright

“Walk as children of light —for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness, and truth.” (Ephesians 5:8-9)

• Consistent time in Scripture guards against dimming (Psalm 119:105).

• Ongoing confession and repentance clear the soot of sin (1 John 1:9).

• Prayer keeps the oil supply flowing (Leviticus 24:2).

• Obedience fuels brightness; partial obedience is partial light.

Visible Testimony of Good Works

“Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16)

Practical expressions:

– Honoring commitments at work and home.

– Displaying punctuality, diligence, and excellence.

– Volunteering in community projects without self-promotion.

– Meeting tangible needs—meals, childcare, repairs—without expecting return.

Loving Service and Compassion

“By this everyone will know that you are My disciples, if you love one another.” (John 13:35)

• Visit the isolated, elderly, and sick.

• Support crisis-pregnancy centers, food banks, and shelters.

• Offer transportation, tutoring, or language help to immigrants.

• Practice hospitality that opens both home and heart.

Speaking Truth with Grace

“Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.” (Colossians 4:6)

• Share the gospel plainly and lovingly.

• Defend biblical morals without harshness.

• Refuse gossip, slander, and coarse joking.

• Encourage instead of criticize; build instead of tear down.

Cultivating Integrity in a Watching World

“So that you will be blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and perverse generation, in which you shine as lights in the world.” (Philippians 2:15)

• Transparent finances, avoiding tax deceit and dishonest gain.

• Sexual purity online and offline.

• Keeping promises even when costly.

• Returning kindness for insult (1 Peter 3:9).

Encouraging Fellowship that Multiplies Light

“The mystery of the seven stars that you saw in My right hand and of the seven golden lampstands is this: The seven lampstands are the seven churches.” (Revelation 1:20)

• Commit to gathered worship; a solitary lamp flickers, clustered lamps blaze.

• Use spiritual gifts to edify others (1 Corinthians 12:7).

• Mentor new believers; light passed on enlarges reach.

• Uphold church discipline; purity sharpens brilliance.

Influencing Culture without Losing Brightness

“You are the salt of the earth… You are the light of the world.” (Matthew 5:13-14)

• Engage civic processes—voting, school boards, community forums—guided by biblical conviction.

• Produce art, music, and literature that reflect truth and beauty.

• Promote justice for the oppressed while resisting ideological error.

• Live hopeful, joyful lives that attract questions about the reason for our hope (1 Peter 3:15).

Continual Refilling for Enduring Radiance

“The spirit of man is the lamp of the LORD” (Proverbs 20:27).

• Seek fresh filling of the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 5:18).

• Fast and meditate to heighten sensitivity to God’s prompting.

• Celebrate and rehearse testimonies of God’s faithfulness to stoke communal light.

Lampstands are designed neither to hide nor to flicker sporadically. As we abide in Christ, walk in holiness, serve in love, speak in grace, and continually refuel with the Spirit, we shine steadily—guiding neighbors to the Light and glorifying our Father before a darkened world.
