How can we be a light in our community?
In what ways can we be the "light" in our communities today?

Light That Reveals and Multiplies

“But everything exposed by the light becomes visible,” (Ephesians 5:13a)

“for everything that is illuminated becomes a light itself.” (Ephesians 5:13b)

Paul reminds us that when God’s light shines, darkness is unmasked and even what was once dark can begin to shine too.

Our Source: Christ, the True Light

John 8:12 — “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in the darkness…”

2 Corinthians 4:6 — God “made His light shine in our hearts” so we can reflect Him.

• Therefore, we don’t manufacture light; we mirror Christ.

Practical Ways to Shine in the Community

Reflect Christ’s Character

• Cultivate the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23).

• Let gentleness and respect govern conversations, even online (1 Peter 3:15-16).

Speak Truth in Love

• Refuse gossip; share words that build up (Ephesians 4:29).

• Confront error graciously, remembering “love covers a multitude of sins” (1 Peter 4:8).

Live with Consistent Integrity

• Honesty in business, school, and taxes shows “blameless and pure” lives (Philippians 2:15).

• Keep promises and pay debts promptly; reliability glows in a flaky world.

Serve Selflessly

• Volunteer where needs are obvious—food banks, schools, neighborhood clean-ups.

• Jesus said, “let your light shine… that they may see your good deeds” (Matthew 5:16).

Offer Hope to the Hurting

• Visit shut-ins, write notes to the grieving, foster or support vulnerable children.

Romans 15:13 promises overflowing hope; share it with those in despair.

Hospitality and Community-Building

• Open your table; shared meals create gospel pathways (Acts 2:46-47).

• Welcome newcomers to church and neighborhood alike.

Stand for Justice While Showing Mercy

• Defend the unborn, the oppressed, and the elderly (Proverbs 31:8-9).

• Pair advocacy with personal kindness—meet practical needs, not just policy debates.

Prayerful Presence

• Walk your block and pray; spiritual darkness lifts when saints intercede (1 Timothy 2:1-2).

• Offer to pray on the spot for co-workers or neighbors facing crises.

Engage Culture Wisely

• Consume media discerningly; recommend wholesome art and music (Philippians 4:8).

• Use social platforms to spotlight truth and beauty instead of outrage.

Keeping the Lamp Trimmed

• Stay in Scripture daily—“Your word is a lamp to my feet” (Psalm 119:105).

• Gather with believers; coal separated from the fire grows cold (Hebrews 10:24-25).

• Confess sin quickly so nothing dims the light (1 John 1:9).

Encouragement to Persist

Proverbs 4:18 — “The path of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn, shining ever brighter…”

• God’s promise: as we keep walking in His light, our influence widens and others begin to shine too.

How does Ephesians 5:13 connect with John 1:5 about light overcoming darkness?
