How can we claim God's promises?
In what ways can we "take possession" of God's promises in our lives?

Setting the Scene

“See, I have placed the land before you. Go in and take possession of the land that the LORD swore to give your fathers—Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—and to their descendants after them.” (Deuteronomy 1:8)

What “Take Possession” Means

• Moving from merely hearing a promise to actively inhabiting it

• Crossing whatever “Jordan River” stands between knowing God’s Word and living it (Joshua 1:2-3)

• Trusting that every promise is already granted in Christ (2 Corinthians 1:20) and stepping forward as owners, not visitors

Ways We Actively Take Possession Today

• Believe the promise exactly as written

– “Blessed is she who believed that the Lord’s word to her would be fulfilled.” (Luke 1:45)

• Meditate on Scripture until it shapes thinking and behavior

– “This Book of the Law must not depart from your mouth; you are to meditate on it day and night…” (Joshua 1:8)

• Obey promptly, even when the next step looks risky

– Israel advanced while the Jordan was still at flood stage (Joshua 3:13-17)

• Speak the promise aloud, aligning words with God’s Word

– “I believed; therefore I have spoken.” (2 Corinthians 4:13)

• Pray with confident petition and thanksgiving

– “In everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” (Philippians 4:6-7)

• Stand firm in spiritual warfare

– “Put on the full armor of God…” (Ephesians 6:10-17)

• Persevere patiently when fulfillment seems slow

– “Imitate those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.” (Hebrews 6:12)

• Walk in holiness to enjoy unhindered fellowship

– “Be holy, because I am holy.” (1 Peter 1:16)

• Stay connected to a believing community

– “Let us consider how to spur one another on to love and good deeds.” (Hebrews 10:24-25)

Promises Confirmed in Christ

“All the promises of God are ‘Yes’ in Him. And so through Him the ‘Amen’ is spoken to the glory of God.” (2 Corinthians 1:20)

• Every covenant blessing finds its legal and living guarantee in Jesus

• Possessing promises, therefore, is never self-generated; it is Christ-enabled

Daily Practices That Keep Us Occupying the Land

• Start each day reading a specific promise and declaring it back to God

• Act on one concrete obedience tied to that promise before the day ends

• Journal evidence of fulfillment, however small, to build memorial stones like Israel’s at Gilgal (Joshua 4:6-7)

• Regularly recount testimonies to others, reinforcing faith and keeping territory won

Taking possession is not a single event but an ongoing lifestyle—trusting, obeying, and advancing, step by step, until every promise God has spoken becomes visible in everyday life.
