How can we mirror God's compassion?
In what ways can we reflect God's "compassionate and gracious" nature in our lives?

God’s Self-Revelation: The Foundation

“The LORD passed in front of Moses and called out: ‘The LORD, the LORD God, compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in loving devotion and faithfulness.’” (Exodus 34:6)

Seeing His Heart, Mirroring His Heart

Because God Himself declares compassion and grace as core to His identity, those who bear His image and are indwelt by His Spirit are called to display the same traits.

Practical Ways to Reflect God’s Compassion and Grace

• Treat people as God treats us

– “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.” (Luke 6:36)

– Let every conversation drip with undeserved kindness; give the benefit of the doubt; refuse to keep score.

• Forgive quickly and completely

– “Be kind and tender-hearted to one another, forgiving each other just as in Christ God forgave you.” (Ephesians 4:32)

– Release grudges; speak restoration, not retaliation.

• Engage suffering, don’t avoid it

– “Bear one another’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” (Galatians 6:2)

– Visit the sick, sit with the grieving, step into messy circumstances.

• Give generously and cheerfully

– “Whoever is kind to the needy honors Him.” (Proverbs 14:31)

– Share time, resources, and talents without expecting return.

• Defend the vulnerable

– “Pure and undefiled religion before our God and Father is this: to care for orphans and widows in their distress.” (James 1:27)

– Speak up for the unborn, the marginalized, the voiceless.

• Cultivate patience

– God is “slow to anger”; imitate Him by slowing your own reactions, especially under provocation.

– Memorize and practice James 1:19: “Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger.”

• Overflow with loyal love

– “Above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfect unity.” (Colossians 3:14)

– Choose covenant-keeping love over convenience; stay when it’s hard.

• Serve without spotlight

– Jesus saw the crowds and “was moved with compassion” (Matthew 9:36) and then acted.

– Volunteer anonymously, meet needs quietly, point credit back to Him.

The Transforming Cycle

As we practice compassion and grace, we experience deeper fellowship with the Lord, which in turn fuels greater compassion. “We love because He first loved us.” (1 John 4:19)

Closing Charge

Walk into each day consciously echoing the words God spoke about Himself: compassionate and gracious. When His character shapes ours, the world around us gets a living glimpse of the God who passed before Moses and still passes before His people today.
