How can we pray for church leaders?
In what ways can we support our church leaders through prayer, as Paul asks?

The Call to Pray for Our Leaders

“Pray also for me, that whenever I open my mouth, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel” (Ephesians 6:19).

Paul’s simple request shows that even the most seasoned servants of Christ rely on the prayers of fellow believers. Our pastors, elders, missionaries, and teachers need the same steady support.

Pray for Spirit-Given Words

Luke 12:11-12 reminds us that the Holy Spirit supplies the right words at the right moment.

• Ask that your leaders’ sermons, lessons, and conversations be fresh, timely, and exactly what the Spirit wants spoken.

• Intercede for insight during their study time so they see treasures in the Word they can pass on (2 Timothy 2:15).

Pray for Boldness and Clarity

• Paul pairs “words” with “fearlessly” (Ephesians 6:19). Pray they speak with courage no matter the audience or cultural pressure.

Acts 4:29 shows the early church asking God to “enable Your servants to speak Your word with complete boldness.” Follow their example.

Colossians 4:4: “Pray that I may declare it clearly, as I should.” Clarity keeps the gospel from being muddied by opinion or fear.

Pray for Protection from Opposition

2 Thessalonians 3:1-2 links gospel advance with deliverance “from wicked and evil men.”

• Ask God to shield leaders from spiritual attack, false accusation, burnout, and divisions that would silence their witness.

2 Timothy 4:17-18 shows the Lord rescuing Paul; plead for that same rescue when your leaders are under pressure.

Pray for Personal Holiness

Hebrews 13:18: “Pray for us; we are convinced that we have a clear conscience and desire to live honorably in every way.”

1 Timothy 4:16 urges leaders to watch both life and doctrine. Pray they’ll guard private thoughts, family life, and public actions so their testimony stays bright.

• Pray they’ll flee temptation, confess sin quickly, and walk in daily repentance.

Pray for Physical and Emotional Strength

• Ministry can be exhausting (2 Corinthians 4:7-9). Ask the Lord to renew their bodies, lift discouragement, and preserve joy.

Galatians 6:9 reminds us that weariness can hit anyone doing good; pray your leaders do not lose heart.

• Request times of sabbath rest and supportive friendships that recharge their spirits.

Pray for Open Doors and Lasting Fruit

Colossians 4:3: “Pray… that God may open a door for our message.”

• Ask for divine appointments in hospitals, coffee shops, neighborhoods, and nations.

• Pray that those who hear will respond in repentance and faith, becoming mature disciples who themselves bear fruit (John 15:8).

Pray Persistently and Together

Ephesians 6:18 calls us to “every kind of prayer… with all perseverance.” Make leader-focused prayer part of personal devotions, small groups, and corporate gatherings.

1 Thessalonians 5:25: “Brothers, pray for us.” Take the verse literally; keep bringing their names to the throne.

• Celebrate answers. When a sermon clearly pierces hearts or a missionary reports breakthroughs, thank God and keep praying.

Specific daily requests you might lift:

– Fresh anointing in sermon prep and delivery

– Wisdom for counseling sessions

– Protection for their marriage and family

– Financial provision without distraction

– Discernment in leadership decisions

– Enduring joy in Christ that overflows to the flock

By praying these biblical themes, we echo Paul’s appeal and become active partners in the advance of the gospel through the leaders God has given us.
