How can we see Jesus in "the least"?
In what ways can we better recognize Jesus in "the least of these"?

Meeting the King in the Margins

“ ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of Mine, you did for Me.’ ” (Matthew 25:40)

What Jesus Declares in Matthew 25:31-46

• The scene is a real, future judgment: the Son of Man on His throne (vv. 31-33).

• Final destiny hinges on visible acts of mercy that prove a living faith (vv. 34-36, 41-43).

• Jesus so closely identifies with the hungry, thirsty, stranger, naked, sick, and imprisoned that serving them is serving Him (vv. 40, 45).

Why Recognizing Him Matters

• To honor the King Himself (Proverbs 14:31; Acts 9:4-5).

• To display the genuineness of saving faith (James 2:14-17).

• To store up eternal reward (Matthew 6:19-21).

Common Blind Spots

• Comfort: insulating routines hide need from view.

• Prejudice: assumptions about worthiness dull compassion (John 1:46).

• Busyness: schedules so tight we no longer “see” (Luke 10:31-32).

Training Our Eyes and Hearts

1. Slow down long enough to notice.

– “Jesus saw a large crowd and had compassion” (Mark 6:34).

2. Ask the Spirit for sight.

– “Open my eyes to behold wondrous things” (Psalm 119:18).

3. Memorize and meditate on key passages.

Isaiah 58:6-8; 1 John 3:17-18; Hebrews 13:2-3.

4. Rehearse the gospel daily.

– We were once spiritually “least” (Ephesians 2:1-5).

5. Keep company with the needy.

– Volunteer consistently; friendship dispels distance (Romans 12:16).

Practical Ways to See—and Serve—Jesus

• Feed: stock shelf-stable bags for homeless neighbors; support local food banks.

• Welcome: host international students or foster children; practice genuine hospitality.

• Clothe: join clothing drives; discreetly meet needs in your own congregation.

• Visit: schedule time each month for hospitals, nursing homes, prisons.

• Advocate: speak for voiceless unborn, persecuted believers, trafficking victims (Proverbs 31:8-9).

• Give skillfully: budget firstfruits for benevolence; underwrite job-training ministries.

Daily Habits That Keep the Vision Clear

• Morning check-in: “Lord, show me one person today in whom I may serve You.”

• Carry a small mercy fund: cash or gift cards set aside for prompting moments.

• End-of-day reflection: “Where did I meet Jesus today? Where did I miss Him?”

• Family rhythm: include children in acts of service; retell stories at the dinner table.

Encouragement for the Journey

• Serving the least is never wasted: “God is not unjust to forget your work” (Hebrews 6:10).

• Small deeds matter: a cup of cold water receives a reward (Matthew 10:42).

• The more we practice, the clearer we recognize His face—and the sweeter the future welcome: “Come, you who are blessed by My Father; inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world” (Matthew 25:34).
