How can we serve God in spirit like Paul?
In what ways can we serve God "in my spirit" as Paul did?

Paul’s Pattern of Inner Service

“ For God, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of His Son, is my witness how constantly I remember you ” (Romans 1:9)

Paul’s service was rooted first in the unseen core of his being. What flowed out in preaching, travel, and letter-writing began as an act of worship in the secret place of his spirit.

What It Means to “Serve … with My Spirit”

• Heart-level worship – adoration that starts before a word is spoken (John 4:24)

• A conscience kept clear before God (2 Timothy 1:3)

• Dependence on the Holy Spirit rather than human strength (Galatians 5:25)

• Motives ruled by love for Christ instead of the approval of people (2 Corinthians 5:14)

Cultivating an Inner Life of Worship

• Daily surrender: “ Present your bodies as living sacrifices ” (Romans 12:1)

• Scripture meditation: letting the Word dwell richly so the Spirit can stir worship (Psalm 1:2; Colossians 3:16)

• Silent awe: pausing to acknowledge God’s holiness (Habakkuk 2:20)

Serving Through Prayer

Paul’s own example in Romans 1:9 centers on intercession. We serve “in our spirit” when we …

• Pray continually (1 Thessalonians 5:17) – turning routine moments into dialogue with God

• Labor in prayer for others’ spiritual growth (Colossians 4:12)

• Rely on the Spirit’s help when words fail (Romans 8:26)

Serving Through Proclamation of the Gospel

• Paul’s inner devotion fueled outward witness “in the gospel of His Son” (Romans 1:9)

• We, too, speak from fullness rather than obligation (Acts 4:20)

• Inner assurance of salvation keeps our message joyful and authentic (1 John 1:3–4)

Serving Through Obedient Living

• Walking by the Spirit bears visible fruit—love, joy, peace… (Galatians 5:22–23)

• Obedience proves our love (John 14:15) and turns ordinary tasks into holy service (Colossians 3:17, 23)

Serving Through Spiritual Gifts

• Gifts are empowered by the same Spirit who indwells our spirit (1 Corinthians 12:4–7)

• Using them “as good stewards of God’s varied grace” is spiritual service (1 Peter 4:10–11)

• Motivation: building up Christ’s body, not showcasing ourselves (Ephesians 4:12)

Continual Dependence on the Holy Spirit

• Ask daily to be filled (Ephesians 5:18)

• Listen for conviction and guidance (John 16:13)

• Quickly confess sin to keep fellowship unbroken (1 John 1:9)

Encouragement from Paul’s Example

• Even in chains he served joyfully (Philippians 1:12–14)

• Hardship could not silence inner worship (2 Corinthians 4:16)

• The same Lord empowers us today (Hebrews 13:8)

To serve God “in my spirit” is to let the Spirit of God ignite, direct, and sustain every prayer, every word, every act—so that public ministry and private devotion are woven together in seamless, God-glorifying service.

How does Romans 1:9 connect with 1 Thessalonians 5:17 about praying continually?
