How can we "come to" Jesus in our daily lives today? Opening Scripture “Everyone who comes to Me and hears My words and acts on them — I will show you what he is like.” (Luke 6:47) What “come to” embraced then—and still embraces now • A step of humble approach, acknowledging Jesus’ authority (John 6:37) • A present-tense, continual movement of heart and will, not a one-time visit (John 15:4) • A readiness to listen attentively and obey promptly (James 1:22) Daily practices that draw us near • Begin each morning inviting His Word to speak first; read a Gospel paragraph aloud and linger over His voice. • Pause at set points in the day (meals, commute, break) to re-center on Him with a brief verse such as Psalm 16:8. • End evenings recounting ways He showed faithfulness, thanking Him aloud (1 Thessalonians 5:18). • Guard ten–fifteen tech-free minutes for silent reflection, letting the Spirit probe motives (Psalm 139:23-24). • Keep short accounts through immediate confession when convicted (1 John 1:9). Hearing His words—keeping the channel clear • Read whole passages, not isolated lines, to grasp His heart and context. • Use Scripture memory to store truth for Spirit-prompted recall (Deuteronomy 11:18). • Listen to faithful preaching and teaching that upholds the full counsel of God (Acts 20:27). • Sing or hum hymns and psalms; melody fastens truth to memory (Colossians 3:16). Acting on what we hear—obedience as the evidence of nearness • Respond immediately to nudges toward kindness, service, or reconciliation (Ephesians 2:10). • Speak words seasoned with grace instead of impulse (Colossians 4:6). • Adjust calendars and budgets to reflect kingdom priorities (Matthew 6:33). • Bear with others patiently, mirroring His forbearance toward us (Ephesians 4:2). • Persevere when obedience is costly, trusting His reward (Hebrews 10:35-36). Promises that bolster every step toward Him • Rest for weary souls: “Come to Me...and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28) • Unbroken acceptance: “Whoever comes to Me I will never cast out.” (John 6:37) • Nearness guaranteed: “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.” (James 4:8) • Grace for every need: “Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence.” (Hebrews 4:16) Living Luke 6:47 today Continual approach, attentive hearing, and decisive obedience form the sturdy foundation Jesus describes. Build on it daily, and every storm will meet a house that stands. |
