How do we support them in church today?
How can we "submit to such as these" in our church community today?

The Command in View

“...I urge you to submit to such as these and to every fellow worker and laborer.” (1 Corinthians 16:16)

Who Are “Such as These”?

• Stephanas and his household—believers “devoted…to the service of the saints” (v. 15)

• By extension, any brother or sister who faithfully pours out time, gifts, and love for the body

• Not merely official leaders, but “every fellow worker and laborer” who is actively serving

Why Submission Matters

• Recognizes Christ’s gift of servant-leaders (Ephesians 4:11-13)

• Protects unity and keeps us from consumer-mindsets (Hebrews 13:17)

• Models Christ, who “humbled Himself” (Philippians 2:5-8)

• Frees servants to serve with joy instead of frustration (1 Thessalonians 5:12-13)

Practical Ways to Submit in Today’s Church

• Listen gladly when faithful servants bring biblical counsel or direction

• Show up—attendance communicates support more loudly than compliments

• Offer your skills under their vision: “How can I help?”

• Pray regularly for their strength and wisdom (Colossians 4:3)

• Guard their reputation; refuse gossip, speak well of them (Titus 3:2)

• Give materially—time, finances, meals—so their hands remain free for ministry (Galatians 6:6)

• Follow through on commitments; reliability lightens their load

• Encourage them with specific words when their labor refreshes you (1 Corinthians 16:18)

Guarding Against Misunderstandings

• Submission is voluntary cooperation, never blind compliance (Acts 17:11)

• Scripture—not personality—sets the boundaries; if anyone departs from sound doctrine, loyalty shifts to Christ alone (Galatians 1:8-9)

• Healthy submission includes mutual accountability (Ephesians 5:21)

Scripture Snapshots That Reinforce the Call

Romans 12:10—“Honor one another above yourselves.”

1 Peter 5:5—“All of you…clothe yourselves with humility toward one another.”

Hebrews 6:10—“God is not unjust; He will not forget your work…you have shown toward His name.”

Heart Application

• Ask the Lord to reveal any pride that resists godly servants

• Cultivate eagerness to assist rather than critique

• Remember: in honoring those who serve, we are ultimately honoring the Chief Servant—Jesus Christ.
