How does Romans 9:4 show God's faithfulness?
In what ways does Romans 9:4 connect to God's faithfulness throughout Scripture?

Setting the Scene

Romans 9:4

“the people of Israel. Theirs is the adoption as sons; theirs the divine glory, the covenants, the giving of the Law, the temple service, and the promises.”

Paul stacks six divine gifts in one sentence. Each gift is a reminder that God keeps His word, generation after generation.

Adoption as Sons – God Claims His People

Exodus 4:22 – “This is what the LORD says: ‘Israel is My firstborn son.’”

Hosea 11:1 – “Out of Egypt I called My son.”

Jeremiah 31:9 – “I am Israel’s Father.”

Calling Israel “son” shows unwavering commitment. Though the nation wandered, the Father never disowned His child. That same faithful character secures New-Covenant adoption for believers in Christ (Ephesians 1:5).

The Divine Glory – God Dwells, God Stays

Exodus 40:34-38 – Glory cloud fills the tabernacle.

1 Kings 8:10-11 – Glory descends on Solomon’s temple.

Ezekiel 1 and 10 – Glory departs in judgment yet promises return (Ezekiel 43:1-5).

God’s visible glory proves He doesn’t save from a distance; He moves in. Even when sin drove the glory out, He pledged to return, and ultimately “the Word became flesh and tabernacled among us, and we beheld His glory” (John 1:14).

The Covenants – God Signs and Never Breaks

• Abrahamic – Genesis 12:1-3; 15:17-18. Unconditional oath guaranteed land, nation, blessing.

• Mosaic – Exodus 24:3-8. Covenant provided the terms of fellowship.

• Davidic – 2 Samuel 7:12-16. A forever King from David’s line.

• New – Jeremiah 31:31-34. Law written on hearts, sins remembered no more.

Every covenant is a fresh signature of faithfulness. Psalm 105:8 celebrates that He “remembers His covenant forever.”

The Giving of the Law – God Reveals His Character

Exodus 19-20 – Thunder, fire, and tablets of stone.

Deuteronomy 4:7-8 – “What nation is so great to have righteous statutes like this?”

The Law anchors Israel to God’s holiness. Though it exposes sin, it also safeguards the promise by keeping the nation distinct until the Messiah fulfilled the Law perfectly (Matthew 5:17).

The Temple Service – God Provides a Way Back

Leviticus 16 – Day of Atonement shows mercy through sacrifice.

Psalm 65:4 – “We will be satisfied with the goodness of Your house.”

Hebrews 9:24 – Earthly rituals pointed to Christ who entered the true sanctuary.

Daily offerings and annual feasts preached that sin required blood yet mercy was available. God faithfully met repentant worshipers at the altar and, in Jesus, became the final Priest and Lamb.

The Promises – God Finishes What He Starts

Genesis 3:15 – First gospel promise.

Isaiah 7:14; 9:6-7 – Child-King prophecy.

Micah 5:2 – Birthplace foretold.

2 Corinthians 1:20 – “For all the promises of God find their Yes in Him.”

Thousands of years span these promises, yet every one is on schedule. Romans 11:29 seals it: “God’s gifts and His call are irrevocable.”

Faithfulness Threaded from Genesis to Revelation

1. He chose (adoption).

2. He manifested (glory).

3. He covenanted (oaths).

4. He instructed (Law).

5. He invited (temple service).

6. He guaranteed (promises).

Together, these six threads weave a single story: a faithful God pursuing, preserving, and perfecting His people—first Israel, then all who are grafted in through Christ.

How can Christians today honor the 'service' and 'promises' referenced in Romans 9:4?
