How does love show our bond with Christ?
How does loving others reflect our relationship with Christ in John 13:35?

The Setting of John 13:35

“By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you love one another.” (John 13:35)

Jesus gives this statement during the Last Supper, just after washing the disciples’ feet (John 13:1–17). Judas has left the room (John 13:30), the Cross is hours away, and the Lord focuses on what will identify His followers once He is no longer physically present.

What Makes the Command “New”

• Not new in concept—God has always called His people to love (Leviticus 19:18).

• New in standard—“As I have loved you” (John 13:34). The disciples are now commanded to love with Christ’s own self-giving, sacrificial pattern (cf. John 15:12–13).

• New in power—After the Cross and Pentecost, the Spirit enables believers to fulfill it (Romans 5:5; Galatians 5:22).

How Loving Others Reflects Our Relationship with Christ

• Evidence of genuine discipleship

– “By this all men will know” (John 13:35). Love is our family resemblance, the unmistakable badge that we belong to Him.

1 John 3:14: “We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love our brothers.”

• Mirror of His character

– Jesus loved first, fully, and to the end (John 13:1). When we love, we display His nature (1 John 4:7–8).

Ephesians 5:1–2 calls us to “walk in love, just as Christ loved us.”

• Obedience to His command

– Love is not optional or merely sentimental; it is a direct order from our Lord (John 14:15).

– Keeping this command shows that we abide in His love (John 15:10).

• Proof of the new birth

– The Spirit produces love (Galatians 5:22). Its presence indicates a transformed heart (Ezekiel 36:26–27).

• Witness to a watching world

– The world cannot see our private devotions, but it can see how we treat people. Authentic love makes Christ visible (John 17:20–23).

– When believers from diverse backgrounds love one another, the gospel’s power is put on public display (Acts 2:44–47).

Practical Expressions of Christ-Like Love

• Serve with humility—look for “foot-washing” moments in everyday life.

• Bear with one another’s weaknesses (Colossians 3:13).

• Give generously—time, resources, encouragement (1 John 3:17–18).

• Speak truth in love (Ephesians 4:15).

• Forgive quickly and completely, as God forgave us in Christ (Ephesians 4:32).

Takeaway Truths to Live Out

1. Our love is the clearest evidence we truly belong to Jesus.

2. We love others best when we stay close to Christ, the source of love.

3. The watching world measures our message by the way we treat one another—so let’s make His love unmistakable.
