How does obedience affect our bond with God?
What role does obedience play in our relationship with God, as seen here?

The Roadside Encounter—2 Kings 10:13

“Jehu encountered the relatives of Ahaziah king of Judah and asked, ‘Who are you?’ ‘We are relatives of Ahaziah,’ they replied, ‘and we have come down to greet the sons of the king and the sons of the queen mother.’”

Jehu’s Commission: Obedience in Action

• God had already spoken: “You are to strike down the house of Ahab your master, so that I may avenge the blood shed by the hand of Jezebel.” (2 Kings 9:6–10)

• Jehu’s swift, literal obedience demonstrated reverence for God’s word.

• His actions, difficult as they were, aligned with divine judgment pronounced years earlier (1 Kings 21:21–24).

Relatives of Ahaziah: Casualties of Compromise

• They “came down to greet” those under God’s sentence. Their loyalties rested with a dynasty steeped in idolatry.

• By ignoring God’s revealed will, they exemplified the cost of misplaced allegiance.

• Their fate underscores that neutrality or casual association with rebellion is itself disobedience (cf. Proverbs 13:20).

Key Takeaways on Obedience

• God’s commands are never suggestions. Obedience is the appropriate, reverent response to His holiness.

• Alignment with His purposes brings protection; alignment against them invites judgment (Deuteronomy 28:1–2, 15).

• Obedience is measured by completeness. Partial compliance, like Saul’s in 1 Samuel 15:22–23, still counts as rebellion.

Echoes Throughout Scripture

Exodus 19:5—obedience establishes covenant closeness: “If you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, you shall be My treasured possession.”

John 14:15—obedience expresses love: “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.”

James 1:22—obedience proves reality: “Be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.”

Obedience and Our Relationship with God

• Obedience is relational, not mechanical; it declares trust in His character and submission to His sovereignty.

• It positions us to participate in God’s redemptive plans, just as Jehu became an instrument of divine justice.

• Disobedience distances; obedience draws near, keeping fellowship unhindered and blessings unhindered.
