How does oil anointing relate today?
How can "anoint my head with oil" relate to our spiritual calling today?

The Shepherd’s Gesture in Psalm 23:5

“You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.”

• In David’s day, a shepherd would rub oil on a sheep’s head to soothe irritations, heal wounds, and repel insects.

• Kings and priests were publicly anointed with oil as a sign of divine appointment and empowerment (Exodus 29:7; 1 Samuel 16:13).

• Both images—shepherd care and royal commissioning—merge in this single line, pointing first to David and ultimately to Christ, the true Shepherd-King.

Jesus, the Fulfillment of Every Anointing

• “God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power” (Acts 10:38).

• At His baptism the Spirit descended, marking Him as the long-promised Messiah (Luke 3:21-22; Isaiah 61:1).

• Because He is the Anointed One, every promise wrapped up in Psalm 23 flows to those who belong to Him.

Our Present-Day Anointing in Christ

2 Corinthians 1:21-22—“Now it is God who establishes both us and you in Christ. He anointed us, placed His seal on us, and put His Spirit in our hearts.”

1 John 2:20—“You have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth.”

• The same Spirit who rested on Jesus now indwells believers, setting us apart for God’s purposes and equipping us to walk in truth.

What This Means for Our Spiritual Calling

Spiritual Care

• The Shepherd tends our minds and hearts, applying the healing “oil” of His Word and Spirit to every wound, fear, or accusation (Psalm 147:3).

• We receive His care by staying under the authority of Scripture and responding in humble dependence.

Spiritual Authority

• As kings and priests in Christ (Revelation 1:6), we are empowered to intercede, to proclaim the gospel, and to stand firm when opposition presses in—right “in the presence of our enemies.”

Spiritual Overflow

• “My cup overflows” follows “You anoint my head with oil.” When God pours His Spirit on us, the result is abundance—love, joy, peace, and every good work (Galatians 5:22-23; Ephesians 2:10).

Living Out the Anointing Each Day

• Start with surrender: acknowledge His ownership and lordship over your life.

• Feed on the Word, allowing the Spirit to renew your mind (Romans 12:2).

• Walk in obedience to promptings aligned with Scripture—this is how the anointing teaches and guides (1 John 2:27).

• Serve others. A true overflow blesses those around you with Christ’s fragrance (2 Corinthians 2:14-15).

• Stand confident. You carry heaven’s seal; no enemy can undo what God has established.

Encouragement for the Journey

The One who once poured oil on shepherd sheep and on Israel’s kings now pours His Spirit on you. Let that reality shape your identity, empower your service, and steady your heart. Your head is anointed; your cup was never meant to run dry.
